Born: Sept. 21, 1951 in New Iberia, La. Resident: Arcadia, Calif. Height: 5'4” (Riding weight, 116)Family: wife Juanita and children Loren and Mandy.Retired: Jan. 2003, due to neck and head injuries suffered in a spill at Del Mar on Aug. 30, 2002Lifetime stats: 6,384 wins from 39,213 mounts and earnings of $195,881,170.Got into racing through his father, an owner, and uncles who were trainers ... Rode Quarter Horses and mixed breeds in Louisiana at age 10 and worked his way through the bush tracks ... Began riding at recognized tracks in 1967 at Fair Grounds ... Broke his maiden on June 29, 1968 at Evangeline Downs. Won back-to-back riding titles at Arlington Park in 1977 and 1978, as well as titles at Fair Grounds, Churchill Downs and Keeneland.After 11 years on the Midwest circuit, moved to Southern California in 1978 where he remained until retirement. He collected titles at Santa Anita (winter/spring and Oak Tree meets), Hollywood Park and Del Mar.Has won seven Breeders' Cup races in 68 rides ... He won two in each of consecutive years: A.P. Indy (Classic) and Thirty Slews (Sprint) in 1992, and Cardmania (Sprint)and Hollywood Wildcat (Distaff) in 1993 ... Other Breeders' Cup winners are Pleasant Stage (1991 Juvenile Fillies), Prince Rooney (1984 Distaff) and Prized (1989 Turf). Has won five Triple Crown races, two consecutive Kentucky Derbies (Gato del Sol, 1982; Sunny's Halo, 1983 -- he is the most recent of only four jockeys to win consecutive Derbies); one Preakness Stakes (Risen Star, 1988) and two Belmont Stakes (Risen Star, 1988 and A.P. Indy, 1992). Besides the Breeders' Cup races, has won four other $1 million events: Molson Export Million (Prized, 1989), Pacific Classic (Tinners Way, 1994 and 1995) and Santa Anita Handicap (Mr Purple, 1996.) Won George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1981. Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1993.Became 14th jockey to hit 6,000-win plateau on Feb. 7, 1999 aboard Sweetcakesanshakes at Santa Anita. Member of the Fair Grounds and Louisiana Sports halls of fame. Only jockey to have mount disqualified in Kentucky Derby (Gate Dancer, fourth to fifth, 1984).In retirement, Delahoussaye has been acting as a bloodstock agent for a variety of clients.Had total hip replacement surgery in October, 2007.
