 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Height: 5'5"
  • Weight: 118
  • Born: Dec. 15, 1970, Milan, Italy
  • Residence: Newmarket, England
  • Family: wife, Catherine and five children ... He is the son of Gianfranco Dettori, 13 times champion jockey in Italy; mother was a professional circus performer.
  • Dettori has had the most Breeders’ Cup success of any foreign-based jockey; his riding double in 2006 (Red Rocks in the Turf and Ouija Board in the Filly & Mare Turf) gave him the most earnings of any jockey on a single Breeders' Cup day. He had another double in 2008 when Raven's Pass lifted the Classic and Donativum won the Juvenile Turf. Other winners include Barathea ('94 Mile), Daylami ('99 Turf), Fantastic Light ('01 Turf) and Wilko ('04 Juvenile) ... His $15,105,672 in Breeders' Cup earnings ranks him fourth among all jockeys and first among active jockeys. Only retired riders Jerry Bailey, Pat Day and Chris McCarron have more.
  • In 2006, he finished second in the British Jockeys' Championship with 131 wins. Since then he has endured three quiet seasons, finishing 11th with 77 wins in 2007, 11th place with 60 wins in 2008 and, up until Oct 16, sixth in 2009 with 74 wins. His big race triumphs in 2008 were on Creachadoir (Lockinge Stakes), Nahoodh (Falmouth Stakes), Folk Opera (E P Taylor Stakes) and, on a rare ride for Sir Michael Stoute, Conduit (St. Leger). In 2009 (up to Oct 16) he has failed to win a single Group 1 race, the Italian Derby victory aboard Mastery and the Anatolia Trophy (in Istanbul, Turkey), triumph of Balius being his biggest successes of the year.
  • Enjoyed a purple patch in early June 2007, winning both the English and French Derbys in the space of 24 hours. At Epsom, the triumph of Authorized finally filled the one gaping hole in his curriculum vitae, allowing Dettori to land Britain's greatest race after failing in his 14 previous tries. The following day he went to Chantilly to win his third French Derby aboard Lawman. And, to cap it all, seven days later he won the other Chantilly classic, the Prix de Diane, aboard West Wind.
  • At age eight, Dettori received a palomino pony. He practiced his riding skills daily and at 13, left school to pursue his vocation.
  • Dettori joined trainer Luca Cumani in Newmarket in July 1985. He was christened “Frankie” by the stable lads when he arrived and the nickname stuck ... Known for his ebullient personality and unashamed show of emotions; his flying dismount after big race wins also make him a favorite of the fans.
  • His first winner was on Billy Pitt at Turin racecourse on Nov. 16, 1986. His first winner in England was on Lizzy Hare at Goodwood on June 9, 1987. After that Dettori’s progress was rapid and he was champion apprentice in 1989 with 75 winners. He also became first jockey for the Cumani Stable. In 1990, he gained the distinction of being the first teenager since the legendary Lester Piggott to ride 100 winners in a British season. This included his first Group 1 winners on Markofdistinction and Shamshir, remarkably achieved in successive races at Ascot.
  • Dettori has been champion jockey in Britain three times  in 1994 with 233 winners, 1995 with 216 winners and 2004 with 192 winners.
  • Has won major races in 12 countries, many of them multiple times, most notably, six editions of Britain's Queen Anne Stakes.
  • He is best known for his association with the Godolphin operation and he has been riding successfully for the Dubai and England-based juggernaut since 1994. He has ridden multiple Group 1 winners for the operation around the world, including Dubai Millennium, who won the 2000 Dubai World Cup
  • Rode all seven winners on the Ascot card on Sept. 28, 1996.
  • He and fellow jockey Ray Cochrane survived the crash of a light aircraft in June of 2000 that killed the pilot. Dettori’s most serious injury was a broken ankle. He returned to the saddle two months later, just yards away from where the plane crashed.
  • Regularly appeared on nationwide television in England, being a team captain of the popular show “A Question of Sport” from 2002-2004.
  • His autobiography, “Frankie: the Autobiography of Frankie Dettori,” came out in 2004.
  • Along with chef Marco Pierre White, he co-owns a family restauarant chain called "Frankie's" in London, and the two co-authored a cookbook of Italian recipes "Frankie Dettori’s Italian Family Cookbook." The traditional Italian recipes, which have special meaning to the authors, are accompanied by notations of childhood memories and their connection to the recipes.
