Lifetime stats: 25,928 mounts, 4,083 wins and earnings of $188,561,787, ranking him 11th on the all-time jockey rankings.
Santos has had 65 Breeders' Cup mounts; his seven victories include the 2002 Classic with Volponi, at 43-to-1, the longest shot on the board; two in the Turf with Chief Bearhart (1997) and Manila (1986); two in the Juvenile with Fly So Free (1990) and Success Express (1987); the Juvenile Fillies with Meadow Star (1990) and the Mile with Steinlen (1989).
Other top mounts over the years have included Fleet Indian, Voodoo Dancer, City Zip, Forbidden Apple, Lemon Drop Kid, Star of Cozzene, Best Pal, Criminal Type, Cryptoclearance and Waquoit
Rode his first race at Hipico Racecourse in Chile when he was 14. “My father was a jockey so I went to the racetrack a lot as a little boy. I started working in the barns when I was eight years old.” Also sold newspapers every day to help earn money to feed the family.
Besides riding in his native Chile, rode two different stints in Colombia, earning a reputation as one of South America's top jockeys before he moved on to the United States.
Began riding in Florida in early 1984 and quickly moved to the top of the standings ... Moved to New York in 1985.
Won four consecutive national money titles: 1986 ($11,329,297), 1987 ($12,407,355), 1988 ($14,877,298) and 1989 ($13,847,003) ... Given the New York Turf Writers' Association's Eddie Arcaro Award as Outstanding Jockey in each of those same years.
Won the Eclipse Award as outstanding jockey in 1988.
Moved to California after the 1990 Belmont fall meeting ... Returned to New York in July 1991.
Suffered serious spill on July 13, 1992, when he fractured his right arm and collarbone and cracked his hip. Doctors implanted two pins and 14 screws to repair the arm. He resumed riding on Dec. 1, 1992.
Has won individual meet titles at Saratoga, Belmont, Aqueduct, Gulfstream, Hialeah and Calder. His 1987 title at Saratoga broke Angel Cordero's 11-year run.
Received the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award from the Jockeys' Guild in 1999.
Has had eight Kentucky Derby mounts, including a win in the 2003 Derby and Preakness Stakes with Funny Cide. They lost their attempt to sweep the Triple Crown when they finished third behind Empire Maker in the Belmont Stakes.
Received ESPN's 2003 ESPY Award as outstanding jockey.
Given the Red Smith "Good Guy" Award by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2003.
4,000th career win came wire-to-wire aboard Melodeeman in the fifth race at Aqueduct on Feb. 4, 2006.
Riding accident of Feb. 1, 2007 left him with five fractured vertebrae, broken ribs and a fractured sternum. He was fitted with removable body cast and began rehab in mid-May, and had hoped to return to riding in the summer
