Ray Sibille began riding on the Louisiana bush tracks. At 16, he took out his jockey's license and had his first winner at Evangeline Downs. He moved to the Midwest in 1973 and spent several productive years garnishing riding titles at Arlington Park, Hawthorne and Sportsman's Park. His 105 wins at Sportsman's Park in 1981 was a record that stood until 1992.
He was based in Southern California from 1981 - 1993. During this time, he enjoyed some of his greatest riding achievements, including a win on his one and only Breeders' Cup mount, Great Communicator, when they were victorious in the 1988 Turf at Churchill Downs.
He returned to the Chicago circuit in 1993 to finish out his riding career. His 4,000th win came on April 18, 2000 at Sportsman's Park. At the time of his retirement, caused mostly by hip replacement due to Sciatica, he was Arlington Park's fourth leading jockey in Park history. He retired with 4,264 wins from 368,858 mounts.
On Nov. 8, 2004, Sibille was recognized by the Illinois House of Representatives for his distinguished career and numerous riding accomplishments.
Sibille was honored with the 2005 George Woolf Memorial Award.
Sibille was a 31-year-member of the Jockey's Guild; he served on its board of directors as well as on the financial committee. He also is an officer for the Don MacBeth Memorial Jockey Fund.
