  • Quick facts about Gary Stevens:

    • At age seven, diagnosed with Perthes Syndrome, a degenerative disease of the hip joint; wore a metal brace on his right leg for 19 months ... The ailment didn't stop him -- he began grooming horses for his father at age eight and began riding career on Quarter Horses at age 14.
    • Dropped out of school at age 17 after an all-star wrestling season to become a full-time jockey.
    • First Thoroughbred winner -- in his first start -- in 1979 at Les Bois Park in Idaho. Soon became a top jockey in Washington. Moved to Southern California and became part of the most competitive and accomplished jockey colonies anywhere.
    • Fourth-leading money-winner in Breeders' Cup history … Has won eight Breeders' Cup races -- fifth most among riders; the most recent being the 2000 Mile with War Chant.
    • Won the 1991 Japan Cup with Golden Pheasant and the Dubai World Cup in 1998 with Silver Charm.
    • Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1997, at age 34.
    • Youngest rider to surpass $100 million in earnings, in 1993.
    • Received Eclipse Award as North America's outstanding jockey in 1998.
    • Has won eight Triple Crown races. In 1997, he and Silver Charm won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes only to be denied the Triple Crown sweep by Touch Gold in the Belmont Stakes. He also won the Derbys in 1988 and 1995 with Winning Colors and Thunder Gulch, respectively; the 2001 Preakness with Point Given; and three Belmonts: Thunder Gulch in 1995, Victory Gallop in 1998 and Point Given in 2001.
    • Earned national money titles in 1990 and 1998.
    • Received George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 1996.
    • He underwent surgery on Dec. 1, 1999 to have a cyst removed from his right knee and returned Dec. 26 only to announce his retirement the next day, citing chronic pain and wear-and-tear on his knee.
    • Retirement only lasted 10 months after he tried working as an assistant trainer and a jockey's agent. He also had knee surgeries in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
    • Moved tack from Southern California to Kentucky this past spring and also rode the Saratoga meet in August.
    • Earned acclaim for his big-screen debut playing George Woolf in blockbuster movie “Seabiscuit,” released in 2003.
    • Suffered a collapsed lung but no broken bones when Storming Home spooked and swerved to the right. Struggling to stay aboard, he nevertheless fell just as they crossed the wire first in the 2003 Arlington Million. Stevens was clipped by two trailing horses but missed only three weeks of riding.
    • Former president of the Jockeys' Guild.
    • Announced a final retirement Nov. 26, 2005 to become a racing analyst for NBC and TVG. Has also served as agent for one of Southern California's current top jockeys, Corey Nakatani.
    • Retired after riding 4,888 winners and with earnings of $221,207,064 in purse earnings to rank fifth on the all-time list by earnings.
    • Nov. 2007, announced that he would move from TVG to HRTV to continue work as a racing analyst. He will also be working for NBC as well.
    • Effective in Jan., 2008, Gary took a position as Senior Advisor - Racing and Bloodstock Affairs for IEAH (International Equine Acquisition Holdings) Stables, a racing and breeding entity established in 2003.
