  • Born: Oct. 17, 1962, Montrose, Colo.
  • Resident: Arcadia, Calif.
  • Family: daughters Michelle, Kristine, Elizabeth and Brianna ... Father A.C. and uncles Milo, Santiago and Mario were jockeys; brother Fabian has competed in Arizona and Southern California.
  • Through Dec. 31, 2006, he ranked 14th nationally in earnings with $9,742,269.
  • Through Dec. 31, 2006 had won 166 races in 883 mounts.
  • Has seven Breeders' Cup victories and was the first jockey to twice win two races in the same year: the 1991 Juvenile (Arazi) and Mile (Opening Verse), then in 1992 in the Juvenile Fillies (Eliza) and Turf (Fraise). Also won the 1986 Juvenile Fillies with Brave Raj, the 1987 Sprint with Very Subtle and the 2003 Distaff with Adoration.

  • Noted for his natural athleticism, horsemanship and lineage, he's never been wanting for mounts. As an apprentice he rode for Charlie Whittingham and Wayne Lukas, among others. In the inaugural Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies, he crossed the wire first with the 75-1 Fran's Valentine; he was disqualified and placed 10th for interference.
  • At 17, became the youngest jockey to win the Santa Anita Derby. He had been a journeyman for one week when he won with Codex.
  • Won the 1989 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes with Sunday Silence. They lost their chance for a Triple Crown when Easy Goer defeated them in the Belmont Stakes.
  • Registered his 3,000th career victory on Sexy Too at Hollywood Park on Dec. 4, 1999.
  • In 2003, he swept all five of the riding titles at the three major Southern California tracks. Then 40, it was his most productive year, he finished fifth nationally with purse earnings of $15,697,353.
  • At Del Mar in 2003, participated in a match race called “Battle of the Sexes.” In a heated stretch drive, he and his mount, Chester's Choice, nosed out Julie Krone, who was aboard Woke Up Dreamin.
  • He enjoyed a big 2005 season, finishing seventh nationally in purses with $11,435,152 while winning on 196 of 978 mounts (20%). He won three G1 races – the Hollywood Gold Cup (Lava Man), Apple Blossom (Dream of Summer) and Santa Margarita (Tarlow) and had four mounts in the Breeders' Cup.
  • On the heels of a successful 2005 season, he topped the 2005-06 Santa Anita meet by number of wins, his 15th major Southern Cal riding title. He was out of action for two months in 2006 with a back injury that required hospitalization. Absent from July 16 until Sept. 17, he returned to ride Becrux to victory in the Woodbine Mile. He was cleared to return to racing in California during the Oak Tree meeting.
  • Career has been interrupted several times by suspensions and license revocations because of substance abuse and other personal problems. Since November, 1978, he has been suspended or denied a license for a total 82 months--nearly seven years.
  • In Nov., 2007, he returned to the saddle after nearly a year off due to injury and physical rehabilitation. He took mounts at Zia Park in New Mexico until his license was reinstated in California.
  • Returned to California to ride in mid-November, only to have his license revoked Dec. 28 for violation of conditions. He cannot reapply for a license until Dec. 31, 2008.
