 Biography and Highlights:
  • Born: June 22, 1959
  • Residence: Naas, County Kildare, Ireland
  • Family: wife Catherine; two daughters Sinead and Aisling ... Kinane’s father was a jockey; his three brothers also were jockeys.
  • Kinane has won three Breeders’ Cup races – Johannesburg (2001 Juvenile) and High Chaparral (2002 and 2003 Turf).
  • Through Oct. 10, 2007, he stands in eighth place in the Irish Jockeys' Championship with 34 winners. Since Kieren Fallon was banned from riding in Britain in July 2006, Kinane has deputized aboard Aidan O'Brien-trained horses in many top British prizes, including the 2007 Coronation Cup on Scorpion and the Ascot Gold Cup on Yeats.
  • Apprenticed to Liam Browne and rode his first winner in 1975 at Leopardstown.
  • Has won most of the top races in Europe, including the Epsom Derby on Commander In Chief (1993) and Galileo (2001), the Oaks on Imagine (2001), the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Carroll House (1989) and Montjeu (1999) and the English 2,000 Guineas with Tirol (1990) and Entrepreneur (1997). Outside Europe he has won the 1990 Belmont Stakes on Go and Go, the 1993 Melbourne Cup on Vintage Crop and the 1997 Japan Cup with Pilsudski.
  • Ended his 15-year association with Irish trainer Dermot Weld in 1999 to become stable jockey for Aidan O’Brien’s Ballydoyle operation. In that first year he won seven group 1 races including the Arc de Triomphe aboard Montjeu, and two, both aboard Stravinsky, in England.
  • In 2000, he partnered the O’Brien-trained Giant’s Causeway with wins in the St. James’s Palace, the Sussex, the Juddmonte International and the Irish Champion. He also had a remarkable run with Rock of Gibraltar who Kinane partnered to six of his seven consecutive group 1 wins in 2001-2002.
  • In 2003, Kinane rode the winners of six of the 10 Irish group 1 contests, including the Irish Champion on High Chaparral who he then rode to a dead-heat victory in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Santa Anita. After so much success with O’Brien it came as a surprise when trainer and jockey announced that they were going their separate ways at the end of the 2003 season. Kinane finished the year as champion jockey in Ireland, his 13th title.
  • In 2004, he rode as retained jockey for John Oxx’s stable. Major wins included the St. James’s Palace and Irish Champion on Azamour. He finished both 2004 and 2005 in fifth place in the Irish jockey’s table.
  • Top mounts of 2005 included group 1 winners Azamour (King George VI & Queen Elizabeth, Prince of Wales's), Saoire, Electrocutionist (Juddmonte International), Proclamation (Sussex) and Donna Blini.
