- Residence: Elmont, N.Y.
- Family: Single ... Grandfather Hugo Jara was a jockey and trainer; his father, Jorge Jara is a trainer; he also has uncles who were jockeys. His siblings did not follow their father into racing. One sister is a psychologist and one is in college; he has one brother, who is an architect.
- Through Dec. 31, 2007, Jara had earnings of $5,900,921, which included his win aboard Invasor in the $6 million Dubai World Cup.
- Jara made quite an impact in his first Breeders' Cup appearance (2006). After finishing eighth in the Juvenile Fillies on Bel Air Beauty, he took the $5 million Classic on Argentinian-bred Invasor. He had no mounts in the 2007 Breeders' Cup.
- Won the 2006 Belmont Stakes with Jazil after dead-heating with him for fourth place in the Kentucky Derby. They also were second in the Wood Memorial.
- Besides Jazil and Invasor, other top mounts in 2006 were Angara, Go Deputy, Bel Air Beauty, Like Now, Chief Officer, Classic Pack and Win With a Wink. In 2007, he rode Big Apple Daddy, Sahara Heat, Cowtown Cat and Sweet Fervor, in addition to Invasor, to stakes victories.
- Growing up, "I did everything," around the racetrack, walking horses, etc. "When I was a kid, I was crazy with the races. I loved them," he says. "I think it comes in the blood. At 14 and in the ninth grade, he left public school and attended jockey school. He won his first race when he was 15 on Soy Soberano Papa at Hippodromo Presidente Remon. He earned the nickname "Ice Boy" because of the fearless way he rode.
- Came to the United States on Dec. 26, 2003, with family friend Samuel Jimenez, a lawyer who trains as a hobby, and started his career at Aqueduct. He lost his bug July 18, 2004.
- First graded stakes victory came aboard Like Now in the Gotham and his first grade 1 came in the Belmont.
- His first agent as well as his roommate was fellow Panamanian Jose Rivera, a cousin of New York Yankees relief pitcher Mariano Rivera. Retired jockey Randy Romero took over Jara's book in early 2006. In 2007, he switched agents to Gatewood Bell and made another change to Bob Meldahl when he relocated to California.
- Injured in a November spill at Hollywood Park in 2007, Jara recuperated and returned to riding in his native Panama. He returned to California in March.
