- Residence: Southwest Ranches, Fla.
- Family: wife Roxanne, three daughters.
- Through Oct. 4, 2009, Velasquez ranked 29th in the nation by earnings, with $5,430,317. From 948 mounts he had 111 victories, winning at a 12% rate and finishing in the money 40% of the time.
- Has four Breeders’ Cup victories to his credit: the TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (Cajun Beat, 2003), the Emirates Airline Distaff (Pleasant Home, 2005), the NetJets Mile (Kip Deville, 2007), and the Bessemer Trust Juvenile (War Pass, 2007). He returned aboard Kip Deville to finish second in the 2008 edition of the Mile.
- Top mounts of 2009 included top turf miler Kip Deville (G1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap), Any Limit (G2 Hurricane Bertie Stakes), My Princess Jess (G3 Beaugay Stakes), and Cape Royale (Darley Ocala Breeders' Sale Championship Stakes).
- Owns riding titles from Saratoga, Churchill Downs, Calder, and Tropical-at-Calder. Currently rides the New York (Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course) and Florida (Gulfstream Park) circuits with agent Roger Sutton.
- Earned his 2,000th win in 2006 aboard Showing Up in the G3 Colonial Turf Cup.
- Finished second in the 2005 G1 Kentucky Derby with Closing Argument, behind Giacomo and in front of Afleet Alex.
- Rode in his native Panama for 14 years before coming to the United States. Was his country’s top apprentice in 1985 and leading rider in 1994 and 1995 before he was persuaded to move to the U.S. by New York breeder-owner Robert Perez in 1996.
- First winner was Ri Quy, a week after he started riding at Panama City’s Hippodromo Presidente Remon in 1985. “I won 60 races in 2 ½ months. You win 60 and you lose your bug.”
- Was introduced to racing by his sister, Elidia, who worked in the racing office and took him to the track when he was 15. Shortly thereafter he enrolled in Panama's national jockey school, the same school attended by Laffit Pincay Jr., Jorge Velasquez and Braulio Baeza. He had previously ridden horses on farms in Panama.
