- Racing Career: Grade 1 wins in 2009 include the Manhattan Handicap (G1) aboard Gio Ponti, the Santa Anita Derby (G1) and San Felipe Stakes (G2) with Pioneerof the Nile, Santa Margarita Invitational Handicap (G1) and La Canada Stakes (G2) with Life is Sweet, Santa Monica Handicap (G1) and Woodbine Mile (G1) over males with 2008 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Ventura, the Del Mar Oaks (G1) with Internallyflawless, and the Norfolk Stakes (G1) with Lookin at Lucky. ... Won three races on Kentucky Cup day, all by waiting and then circling the field: the Classic (G2) with Furthest Land, Distaff (G3) with Indescribable, and Sprint (G3) with El Brujo. ... - Doubled his Breeders’ Cup wins to eight after winning four in 2008 and earning his third Bill Shoemaker Award for top performance by a jockey in the Breeders’ Cup. He previously won the award in 2005 and 2007.
- Has been regularly shown as the "villain" on the popular show "Jockeys" because as a leading rider, he is the one the other jockeys most want to beat.
- Scored his 3,000th career win on Sept. 28, 2008, aboard Hyperbaric in the G2 Oak Tree Mile.
- Scored first Kentucky Oaks win in 2007 aboard Rags to Riches for trainer Todd Pletcher.
- Based in Southern California for most of his career, but moved his tack to the East to replace the injured John Velazquez as Pletcher’s first-call rider in April 2006. Represented by agent Ron Anderson, he has continued to ride for Pletcher as well as a number of other leading East Coast conditioners, but has returned to Southern California for the most part.
- Won his 71st stakes race of the year aboard 2-year-old Spring Awakening in the Moccasin at Hollywood Park on Nov. 11, 2007, breaking Jerry Bailey’s 2003 record of 70.
- Missed 21 months of racing for personal reasons including issues with substance abuse. He entered rehab Oct. 29, 2003, a date that coincided with his two Breeders’ Cup victories two years later.
- Won his 2,000th race at Del Mar in August 2002.
- Captured back-to-back runnings of the Arkansas Derby in 1994 with Concern and in 1995 aboard Dazzling Falls.
