Strengths: Proven commodity against America’s (and the world’s) top turf runners, winning the 2006 Arlington Million and twice finishing fourth in the BC Turf (2002 and 2003). Consistent front-runner seldom misfires and avoids many of the trappings (traffic, pace) of turf racing with his natural early speed.
In The Genes: One of the last offspring of 1978 Triple Crown winner Affirmed (who died in 2001) still active on the track in 2007. As a stallion, Affirmed was best known as a broodmare sire and for producing champion turf mare Flawlessly. Dam, Lizzie Rolfe, lost all 3 starts, but has produced $500K earner Mama Simba.
Status: The Tin Man did not make a run in the Breeders' Cup Turf; Mandella didn't think he was showing the enthusiasm for training that he should have been. After exploratory surgery Oct. 25, he was coming out of anesthesia and took an awkward step suffering a knee injury that was deemed serious enough to retire him. He will live in retirement at Marty and Pam Wygod's River Edge Farm in Buellton, Calif.

Biographies on jockeys, trainers and owners are from the Breeders' Cup World Championships events from 2001 through 2009, and are intended as informational resources. Biographies will be updated if an individual is again a participant in the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
Biographies are available for most horses appearing in the top 100 money earnings list, and/or for those who are frequently making headlines in the news starting with the 2006 Triple Crown season.
