Strengths: Trainer Shug McGaughey has the magic touch with star fillies and mares, most taking their time to develop. The fact that this filly hit the Grade 1 ranks in just her third lifetime start is a testament to her upside. A pure router from day one, she's top-class up to 10 furlongs.
Weaknesses: Big, long-striding mare can be compromised by wide trips given her running style. Keep-on-coming style plays stronger at 10 furlongs than 1-1/8 miles races that feature a stronger speed emphasis.
In The Genes: Dam, Matlacha Pass, is a full-sister to 2005 Breeders' Cup Distaff heroine Pleasant Home. Sire, Arch, is having a major impact on the 2006 class of 3-year-old fillies with Pine Island and Del Mar Oaks winner Arravale.
Bet You Didn't Know: The “real” Pine Island is the largest island on the west coast of Florida (17 miles long), off the shore from Ft. Myers.
