Strengths: Took 2005 BC Sprint winner Silver Train to the hilt over that one's favorite track (Belmont) in the Tom Fool. Fantastic pedigree to be any kind and has been raced sparingly by a Hall of Fame trainer in Allen Jerkens.
Weaknesses: Has struggled to carry his speed at longer distances, which can be a detriment even at six-furlong showdowns against several horses of equal or better ability. Carried light weights through smallish field sizes for most of 2005 and ‘06.
In The Genes: Legendary sire Danzig died in January 2006 at age 29. He sired BC champions Lure, Dance Smartly, Chief's Crown and War Chant, as well as Belmont winner Danzig Connection and Preakness champ Pine Bluff. Dam, Starry Dreamer, earned more than $500K as a multiple turf stakes winner. Her first 3 foals all became stakes winners.
Status: Retired to stud at Claiborne Farm in Kentucky. His first foals are due in 2008.
Bet You Didn't Know: Danzig sired the winner of the very first Breeders' Cup race in history – Chief's Crown in the 1984 Juvenile.
