Strengths: Tough veteran is a pure six-furlong sprinter (16-for-18 in the money at the distance). Despite being a Cal-bred, has fantastic company lines – facing Taste of Paradise, Woke Up Dreamin, Surf Cat, Bordonaro, Siren Lure, Kelly's Landing et al.
Weaknesses: Settles for the minor awards most often at the highest levels.
In The Genes: Sire, Smokester, never won beyond 6-1/2 furlongs in his short, 4-race career, but is best known for siring 1997 Santa Anita Derby winner and Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Free House. Dam, Andrea Gail, is an unraced half-sister to multiple graded stakes-winning sprinter Elaborate.
Status: In April, 2008, the 2001 Smokester gelding, bred in Calfornia by John Toffan and Trudy McCaffery, retired with nine wins in 45 starts and earnings of $926,254. He will be living at Tranquility Farms in Tehachapi, Calif. http://www.tranquilityfarmtbs.org/
