Strengths: Sensational U.S. form in limited engagements, he’s the proven goods, having won the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Turf and finishing third in his ’07 title defense. Based in America since July, the 5-year-old has been able to further acclimate and build on his defeat of Curlin in the Man o’ War at Saratoga. The exceptional 1-1/4 mile performer in Europe has been able to easily extend that success to the Turf’s 1-1/2 miles distance in America.
Weaknesses: A second-tier performer in Europe against that continent’s best grass runners, he may be susceptible to a top challenge from overseas in the Turf. He also has had an extremely light campaign in 2008, racing only twice in legitimate events for his class. Figures to compete over the firmest turf course of his career at Oak Tree at Santa Anita, a new variable.
In The Genes: From the initial crop of spectacular young sire Galileo, who has been a marathon influence overseas and remarkably produced the 1-2-3 finishers in last year’s final English classic, the St. Leger, at 1 3/4 miles. Galileo finished sixth in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Classic when trying dirt for the only time in his career, but was a spectacular winner of the English and Irish Derbies.
Bet You Didn’t Know: Of the 6 reigning Breeders’ Cup Turf winners to defend their titles, only 2002-’03 repeat winner High Chaparral has finished in the exacta. The others: Better Talk Now (7th), Buck’s Boy (3rd), Chief Bearhart (4th), Fraise (4th) and Lashkari (4th).
