- Family: wife Carolyn; daughters Kim (a trainer), Robin, Tammy and Kristi (a jockey), son James K. (also a trainer)
- Professional Background: Initially owned and operated Chapman Trucking Company, a firm founded by his father … Though the company name remains, it has been inactive since the mid-1970s
- Racing Background: Had horses starting at age 8 and rode in races at unrecognized meets throughout Northeastern Ohio as a youth … Purchased his first Thoroughbred in 1964 and shortly thereafter began training full time
- Racing Career: First big horse owned was 1967 Ohio Derby winner Out the Window, a $6,250 claim … Chapman spent two decades training on the Ohio circuit before setting in Florida and serving as farm manager for Arthur Appleton’s Bridlewood Farm … He and his wife now own and operate 165-acre Chapman Farm in Oxford … Chapman Farm is primarily involved in pinhooking ventures but retains about 15 horses at the track … Owned a number of top horses overseen at the track by son Jimmy (James K.), a semi-retired trainer … Top horse Jim K. Chapman has trained is Caller One who ran fourth in 2000 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and third in 2001 Sprint. Caller One, in training at age 10, earned more than $3.2 million with consecutive wins in the 2001 and ’02 Dubai Golden Shaheen … Another top trainee was Western Pride, who captured three Derbys in 2001 and later the 2002 San Fernando Breeders’ Cup Handicap … Other stakes winners owned and/or trained by Chapman include Isaypete and Lake Alice … Malibu Mint was initially purchased by Chapman as a yearling with the intention of re-selling her as a juvenile … “But she just kind of fell behind and I never got around to prepping her for the sales,” he explains of keeping her … First stakes win came last December in Calder’s Chaposa Springs Handicap with daughter Kristi in the irons … Chapman sold Malibu Mint to Martha Jane and John Mulholland in May, with the sales contract including a bonus for Chapman for training her to a grade 1 win … Two months later, she captured the Princess Rooney Handicap, earning Chapman that bonus.
