  • Born: May 28, 1936; Oxford, N.C.
  • Residence: West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Del Mar, Calif. "Last year we moved into the Colonial House in West Hollywood where Clark Gable used to live," said Currin, who owns several homes
  • Family: wife Betty, to whom he has been married for 51 years; son Patrick, daughter Jamie
  • Professional Background: Prominent builder and developer in California since moving west in 1959. "For many years, I was in land development and custom-house building from San Diego to San Francisco," said Currin. "I started Rancho Mirage." Lived in Pleasanton, where he built Oak Tree Farm which he owns, before moving to Southern California 20 years ago ... "I met Al (racing partner Al Eisman) in L.A. selling swimming pools before I split off into development."
  • Racing Background: "I was educated at Oxford," quipped Currin, who grew up in Oxford, N.C. "I was not born into horses. I created an interest at a young age in show horses, hunters and jumpers."... Took out trainer's license in 1972
  • Racing Career: Has trained such stakes winners as Memorette (2006 Beverly Hills Handicap), Stormello, Outta Here, Griefnaggrevation, Castling, Smooth and Sportif plus stakes-placed Bashert and Commandant ...Outta Here earned more than $650,000 while circling the globe. He won the 2002 Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in Louisiana, finished seventh in the 2003 Kentucky Derby and raced in Japan and Dubai ... Stabled year-round at Hollywood Park with 20 horses he owns ... Stormello will be his first Breeders' Cup starter ... Memorette had been considered for the Breeders' Cup two years ago but didn't run. He gave his wife Betty Memorette as a Christmas present in 2003 ... "I didn’t mean to give her such a big present," Currin said. "I didn’t have time to go to the shopping mall, so I went out to the pasture and picked one out. She was always complaining to me that they wouldn’t let her in free to the satellite wagering facility because she was not an owner. I said, ‘I can fix that.’ Now she gets an owners’ pass.” ... Previously had raced stakes-winning Fondre in partnership in the early 1980s
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Owns between 60 and 70 horses, several in partnership with Eisman ..."It takes six to seven years to grow the business," said Currin of his land development experience. "I approach this the same way." ... Currin has upgraded his stock during the past decade and said, "I'm only interested in top-quality horses." ... Keeps most of his mares and babies at Rancho Paseana near Del Mar and Valkyre Stud near Georgetown, Ky. ... Bought Wilshewed, dam of Stormello, at a yearling sale and raced and bred her. She has a 2005 filly named Ever So Pretty (a full to Stormello), a 2006 filly by Malibu Moon named Malibuwed and a 2008 filly by Stormy Atlantic (also a full to Stormello) ... Was advised to sell Wilshewed while she was carrying Stormello but resisted.
