  • Born: May 20, 1970 in Ninas Gerais, Brazil
  • Residence: Miami, Fla.
  • Family: wife Sirlene; sons Victor Manoel and Brian
  • Through Dec. 31, 2007, Cruz had won 291 races from 1,507 mounts. In 2007, he ranked 29th on the list of top jockeys by earnings with $6,386,607.
  • Top mounts have included Splendid Blended (G2 Shirley Jones Breeders’ Cup Handicap), Adhrhythm (My Dear Girl), Straight Faced (Birdonthewire, Dr. Fager), Storm in May (Sunshine Millions Dash), Istan (Artax H), Gin Rummy Champ (Calder Turf Sprint Handicap) and Running Lass (Gene’s Big Sky).
  • Fixture on the Florida circuit has not yet had a Breeders' Cup mount. He was one of three rookie jockeys in the 2008 Kentucky Derby; he finished 11th aboard Smooth Air.
  • Grew up riding jumpers on a farm in Brazil where his father worked as an assistant trainer for the show and racehorse operation.
  • Rode his first race at age 15 after completing the requisite jockey school, located at Hipodromo Cidade Jardim. Won 1,200 races at Cidade Jardim before coming to the United States.
  • He was the leading rider at Tampa Bay Downs in 2002 and the leader at Calder in 2003 and 2006.
  • Broke Walter Guerra’s single-season record of 193 wins at Calder set in 1979 when he won 198 last year, but he still finished second to Eddie Castro in the standings.
