- Racing Background: A lifelong fan of Thoroughbred racing, Porter first became interested in the sport by going to Delaware Park with his family as a youngster … He started out as an owner in 1994 by claiming two horses
- Racing Career: Races Kodiak Kowboy in partnership in Vinery Stable, which purchased the colt for $70,000 at the 2006 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co.’s August yearling sale … Porter bought into Kodiak Kowboy after the colt won the G3-Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs on July 7, 2007. … Won the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Distaff (now Ladies' Classic) with Round Pond, who Porter purchased as a yearling for $105,000 … At the conclusion of her racing career, Porter sold her to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum for $5.75-million at the 2007 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November sale … Another Porter headliner was G1-winner Hard Spun, runner-up in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Kentucky Derby … Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley purchased breeding rights in Hard Spun prior to his fourth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes. Porter, however, retained some interest in the colt, who was retired following the Breeders’ Cup … Porter’s first Breeders’ Cup starter was Jostle, ninth in the 2000 Distaff. … Campaigned Rockport Harbor, who was a leading 2005 Triple Crown candidate before being injured and retired … Rockport Harbor also stands at Darley in Lexington, Ky. … Porter had a Web site created for Rockport Harbor (www.rockportharbor.com), which now includes information about his current Fox Hill Farm runners … He was unable to use the Fox Hill name for his stable’s Web site because the name was taken … Campaigned the ill-fated Eight Belles, who suffered fatal leg injuries just past the finish line after finishing second in the 2008 Kentucky Derby to Big Brown ... The death of the multiple stakes winning filly spurred significant change in the Thoroughbred industry, including the ban of steriods in many racing jurisdictions
- Breeding/Racing Operation: Has 25 horses in training under the stable name of Fox Hill Farm with trainers Tony Dutrow, Barclay Tagg, Nick Zito and Steve Asmussen ... Had many horses with trainer Larry Jones, including Eight Belles and Hard Spun, but had to move his horses to other trainers in 2009 after Jones announced his retirement from racing ... He christened his stable for a house of that name that he purchased in Delaware around 1989 … Porter had to go to the post office to get the Fox Hill name removed as his address but decided to use it for his racing stable … On Oct. 26, 2009, Porter said the downturn in Thoroughbred prices and the overall economic recession has had little affect on his operation that focuses on buying potential racehorses at major yearling and two-year-olds in training sales … “It seems the horses we really want are bringing more than we thought,” he said. … Owns eight broodmares and has been “in and out” of the breeding business but said that his passion is racing not breeding. … “It [the breeding business] takes too long and I am not in Kentucky to see the foals,” he said.
