  • Born: Nov. 18, 1939, in Newbury, England
  • Residence: Nobleton, Canada
  • Family: son, John
  • Racing Background: Grew up riding horses as a child and competed internationally at show jumping events ... He earned a degree in agriculture, specializing in farm management, and briefly attempted a career as an amateur steeplechase rider … Emigrated to Canada from England in 1970. When he first landed in Canada, he opened a chain of clothing boutiques, but it took only about a year before he gravitated back to horses.
  • Racing Career: Took out his trainer’s license in 1971 after galloping horses for other trainers. Began his Thoroughbred training career with Roy Kenney’s Gateway Farms in Milton, Ontario, Canada. In 1975, he took over as head trainer of Charles (Bud) Baker’s Norcliffe Stable and won first Queen’s Plate with Norcliffe, his first starter in the prestigious race for Canadian-breds. Took over Bud Willmot’s Kinghaven Farms outfit in 1985. Won his second Queen’s Plate in 1987 with Market Control and earned a $1 million bonus for Kinghaven when With Approval and Izvestia won back-to-back Canadian Triple Crowns in 1989-1990. His third Canadian Triple Crown came in 1993, with Peteski, owned by Earle Mack. Attfield notched his record sixth Sovereign Award as Canada’s top trainer in 2002. His earnings of $4,564,221 that year marked a career best ... Has won the Queen’s Plate a record-tying eight times, with the most recent being Not Bourbon in June of this year. The Queen’s Plate is the oldest continuously run stakes race in North America ... 2008 marked the 149th edition of the three-year-old stake for Canadian-breds. He’s also the only man to train three Canadian Triple Crown winners ...
