- Born: July 29, 1953, Mobridge, S.D.
- Residence: Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
- Family: wife Tina Marie, sons Brady Thomas and Riley Tucker, daughter Olivia
- Professional Background: His father was a veterinarian and Bill would follow him around as he made calls. He knew early on that his life would be spent with horses
- Racing Background: Owned and trained his first horse at age 15, a $320 mare named My Assets. Mott ran My Assests at unrecognized meetings in South Dakota and later won his first race at a recognized track with her at the now-defunct Park Jefferson Racetrack. With purse earnings from My Assets and his savings, he purchased Kosmic Tour for $2,000. Won the South Dakota Futurity at Park Jefferson with Kosmic Tour before he was out of high school
- Racing Career: Worked for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg for three years … Started his own stable in the fall of 1978 … Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1998 at age 45, becoming the youngest trainer ever inducted … Won back-to-back Eclipse Awards as the top trainer in 1995 and 1996 … Eclipse winners he has trained are: Ajina, 1997 champion 3-year-old filly; Cigar, Horse of the Year and champion older horse in 1995 and 1996; Escena, 1998 champion older filly or mare; Paradise Creek, 1994 champion male turf horse; and Theatrical, 1987 champion male turf horse … Three-time recipient of the New York Turf Writers Association Outstanding Trainer Award (1995, 1996 and 2000) … Will always be best remembered for his training of Cigar, winner of a record-tying 16th straight races during 1995 and ’96. The streak included victories in the 1995 Breeders' Cup Classic and the inaugural Dubai World Cup and ended with the Arlington-Citation Challenge ... Said Mott of Cigar, “He’s the best horse I’ve ever trained. He may be the best horse anyone has ever trained.” ... Cigar was beaten in the Pacific Classic, and ended his racing career with a close third-place finish in the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Classic. Cigar was the highest money-earner of all time with $9,999,815 until being passed by Curlin in 2008 ... After a public retirement ceremony at Madison Square Garden in New York, Cigar was to join the stallion band at Ashford in Versailles, Ky., but due to infertility, is living out his days as a star attraction at the Kentucky Horse Park … Mott has won nine training titles at Saratoga, 10 titles at Belmont Park, nine at Gulfstream Park and five at Keeneland ... He is all-time winningest trainer at Churchill Downs … He set the record for number of victories at a single Churchill Downs meeting, 54, during the 1984 spring meet … Recipient of the 1996 Turf Publicists of America Big Sport of Turfdom Award, along with Cigar, Allen Paulson and Jerry Bailey … As a trainer normally known for his work with older horses, Mott excelled in ’07 with a barn full of terrific two-year-olds, including G1 Hopeful Stakes winner Majestic Warrior, who gave Mott his first victory in that prestigious Saratoga stakes. Of Mott's 27 wins at Saratoga in 2007, 11 were with juveniles ... With a stable of younger horses, has started three runners in the last two Kentucky Derby to bring his total to six starters ... Hold Me Back finished 12th in ’09, while Court Vision and Z Humor finished 13th and 14th, respectively in ’08 ... Mott ranks fourth in Breeders’ Cup money earned behind D. Wayne Lukas, Bobby Frankel and Shug McGaughey. He also ranks fourth in starters with 54 behind the same threesome ... Has conditioned Grade 1 winners Gun Salute, Shakespeare, Sweet Symphony and Sand Springs as well as graded stakes winners Wend, Silver Tree, Sharp Susan, Ebony Breeze, Silver Whistle, Pommes Frites, Istan, Splendid Blended, After Market, Go Between, Taittinger Rose, Old Forester and Union Avenue … Through Aug. 14, 2009, his trainees earned $4,538,304 and won 69 races. He has won 15 stakes, eight of them graded. ... Through Aug. 26, Mott is third in the Saratoga standings with 10 wins. ... Top runners in 2009 include Dynaforce, winner of the Beverly D. (G1), Mr. Sidney who won the Maker's Mark Mile (G1) and the Firecracker Handicap (G2), Hold Me Back, winner of the Lane's End Stakes (G2), and Courageous Cat, winner of the National Musuem of Racing Hall of Fame Stakes (G2) ... Hold Me Back finished 12th in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
