 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Born: Oct. 20, 1968
  • Residence: Newmarket, England
  • Family: wife Rebecca; three young daughters, Emily, Rose and Martha
  • Education: He was educated at Eton
  • Web site: http://www.edunlop.com/
  • Racing Background: He is the son of the 1995 British champion trainer John Dunlop ... He began his career by working on stud farms in Ireland and Kentucky before completing the National Stud student course in Sydney, Australia. On his return to Britain he spent three years as assistant to Nicky Henderson before moving to Newmarket to join Alex Scott, trainer of 1991 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Sheikh Albadou. Dunlop spent two years at Oak Stables until Scott’s murder, an event which shook the racing community. But life had to go on in the stables and it was Dunlop who took over the reins
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: With the help of the late Sheikh Maktoum al Maktoum, Dunlop took out his license in October of 1994. With the new trainer came a new name for the yard, Gainsborough Stables, named after Maktoum al Maktoum’s racing company … Dunlop did not have to wait long for his first winner which came on Oct. 19, 1994, with Lynton Lad at Yarmouth … Dunlop has been described as “an old head on young shoulders” and with more than 100 horses in his care, he has had to grow up quicker than most … Dunlop’s 1996 marriage was followed by the first classic victory of his training career with Ta Rib in the Dubai Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (French 1,000 Guineas) ... Iktamal scored Dunlop’s first group 1 in Britain when he won the Haydock Park Sprint Cup Stakes that September … Dunlop has followed in his father’s footsteps in his willingness to travel abroad in search of victory. In 1996, he sent Cadeaux Tryst to win in Istanbul, Turkey, while Night Style notched Dunlop’s third group 1 win in the Gran Criterium at San Siro, Milan, in October 1999 … In 2001 Dunlop’s top performer was Lailani, who took the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. She also enjoyed a grade 1 win in the Flower Bowl Invitational at Belmont Park … During 2003 Dunlop sent out 50 winners, albeit without enjoying success at the highest level. But his name was back in the lights in 2004 following the outstanding season he enjoyed with Lord Derby’s 3-year-old filly Ouija Board, whom he campaigned to win both the English and Irish Oaks before saddling her to finish a highly credible third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. She topped off her season with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf … In 2005, with Ouija Board restricted to two starts before the Breeders' Cup because injury, Dunlop's flagbearer was the 5-year-old Court Masterpiece, whose best result from a 10-race campaign in which he never finished out of the first four was victory in the Prix de la Foret at Longchamp ... Ouija Board made up for lost time after failing narrowly to defend her Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare crown (second to Intercontinental). She won the Hong Kong Vase at Sha Tin prior to a close fifth in the Japan Cup ... Ouija Board (wins in the Prince of Wales's Stakes and the Nassau Stakes) and Court Masterpiece (Sussex Stakes) have been the stable stars again in 2006. Ouija Board reclaimed her title in Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf, making her the most successful Breeders' Cup runner in history with two wins and a second in her three starts. She capped off her stellar career with a gallant third-place finish in the 2006 Japan Cup.
