Family: wife Kristen, children Christopher (now working as an assistant for his father) and Remy

An essayist and poet, he also co-wrote a script for the television series "Hill Street Blues"

Former professional rodeo rider and show horse trainer
First stakes winner was Sure Fire in the 1977 Aprisa Handicap at Pomona
Best horse was Gilded Time, winner of the 1992 Breeders' Cup Juvenile. Gilded Time, an $80,000 purchase, went on to earn $855,890 and was a perfect four-for-four as a two-year-old. He earned the 1992 Eclipse Award as Champion juvenile. Gilded Time also finished third in the 1993 Breeders' Cup Sprint--his first start that year. He has had 12 other Breeders' Cup starters, most recently Disturbingthepeace and Nuclear Debate, both off the board in 2002.
Vienna is the trainer of three former world record holders--Native Passer, Classy Women and Finder's Fortune. Native Passer set the 6 fi-furlong record (1:13 3/5) at Del Mar in 1988; Classy Women covered the 5 1/2-furlong distance in 1:01 at Hollywood Park in 1991; and Finder's Fortune went 7 1/2 furlongs in 1:26 4/5 at Hollywood Park in 1993
Has had success turning European horses into stakes winners in the United States: Janet, a winner of multiple stakes races including Grade I wins in the Ramona Handicap at Del Mar and the Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Oak Tree, both in 2001, has earned $1,027,250; and Suances, a Group 1 winner from France, won the 2002 San Francisco Breeders' Cup Mile Handicap
Disturbingthepeace, a four-year-old California-bred gelding won six straight races, including the Pat O'Brien, the Bing Crosby Breeders' Cup and the Triple Bend Breeders' Cup Handicaps. Disturbingthepeace was supplemented to the Sprint for $90,000 by owners David and Rita Milch.
Other multiple stakes winners include Above Perfection, Awesome Daze, Echo Eddie, Star Parade, Fly Til Dawn, Joey Franco, Golden Klair, Queen of Wilshire and Mountain Bear.
