  • Born: Sept. 22, 1951 in Tomakomai, Hokkaido, Japan
  • Racing Background: Fujisawa’s association with racing began through his father, who was a breeder and raised his son in a part of Japan renowned for its breeding farms ... His first racetrack job was with Gavin Pritchard-Gordon in Newmarket, England ... He returned to Japan in 1977 and worked as an assistant trainer for more than 10 years under Kazuo Kikuchi, his father-in-law Katsumi Sato, and Yuji Nohira. ... During that time, he helped in the development of Symboli Rudolph, winner of seven stakes including Japan’s Triple Crown 
  • Racing Career: Fujisawa started his own stable in 1988  and won his first race with Galdan on April 24, 1988 ... Since then, Fujisawa has been the leading trainers in the Japan Racing Association for 11 of the last 15 years  ... In 1994, he won 53 races to become the first JRA trainer in 20 years to win 50 or more races  ... He has trained Japan’s Horse of the Year four times: Taiki Shuttle (1998), Symboli Kris S. (2002-03) and Zenno Rob Roy (2004)  ... He has competed in the Breeders’ Cup Classic twice, sending out Taiki Blizzard, who was 13th in 1996 and sixth in 1997. Taiki Blizzard was the first Japan-based horse to compete in the Breeders' Cup ... Fujisawa was more successsful in subsequent trips to North America ... A son of Better Than Honour, the same dam who produced the 2006 (Jazil) and 2007 (Rags to Riches) Belmont Stakes (G1) winners, Casino Drive debuted in the United States with a victory in the Peter Pan (G2) at Belmont Park ... Second-choice in the morning line for the Belmont Stakes, Casino Drive sustained a stone bruise on his left hind hoof on the eve of the race and did not run in the final leg of the Triple Crown  ... He was shipped back to Japan, but has returned to the United States in order to face Big Brown and older horses in the Breeders’ Cup Classic ... Fujisawa, who began training for Yamamoto in 2004, has 72 horses under his care in Japan.
