Biography, Highlights and Media:
|
|
- Born: March 30, 1951, Sussex, England
- Residence: Newmarket, England
- Family: wife, Rachel Hood, four children
- Education: Read economics at Cambridge University
- Racing Background: Son of “Towser” Gosden, who trained for more than 35 years prior to his death in 1967 … After university, Gosden worked in land management in Venezuela before returning to England to be assistant to Sir Noel Murless. After Murless’ retirement, he became assistant to Vincent O’Brien in Ireland and then went to California to assist Tommy Doyle
- Racing Career: Took out an American license in 1979 and trained two Eclipse Award winners – Bates Motel (1983 handicap horse) and Royal Heroine (1984 turf mare), who won the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Mile that year ... Returned to England in 1988 to train at Stanley House Stables in Newmarket ... Won his first British classic in 1996 when Shantou won the St Leger ... In 1997, Gosden achieved every trainer’s dream when landing the Epsom Derby with Benny the Dip ... Dedicated his win to his father, who had trained the 1966 winner of the race, Charlottown, as a juvenile but, owing to failing health, passed the horse on to Gordon Smyth before he began his classic season ... His career took another twist at the end of 1999 when he took up an offer from Robert Sangster to train at his Manton complex after Peter Chapple-Hyam and Sangster parted company ... Marked his debut season there with another classic winner when Lahan won the 2000 renewal of the 1,000 Guineas ... Other top horses that he has trained include Muhtarram, Observatory, Oasis Dream, Ryafan and Wolfhound ... Surprised the racing world in late 2005 with his decision to leave Manton and return to Newmarket to operate from Clarehaven Stables
- Breeding/Racing Operation: In each of his first three seasons back in Newmarket he achieved a solitary Group 1 success – the Fillies Mile in 2005 (with Nannina), the Coronation Stakes in 2006 (Nannina again) and the St Leger in 2007 (Lucarno). He ended 2007 in ninth place in the trainers' championship with 68 wins from 401 runners ... In 2008 enjoyed a huge highlight on Sept. 27 when Raven's Pass and Rainbow View won two Group 1 races staged at Ascot, the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Fillies' Mile, a double he also pulled off in 2000 with Observatory and Crystal Music ... Even that double was surpassed at the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, when the victory of Raven's Pass in the Classic followed up the earlier success of Donativum in the Juvenile Turf ... His 2009 season began well when Virtual landed the Lockinge Stakes and his standout performer has been Dar Re Mi, who was only denied a third straight Group 1 victory by a harsh disqualification in the Prix Vermeille ... Gosden returns to Santa Anita in 2009 with Group 1 winner Rainbow View for George Strawbridge and the juvenile colt Pounced, a runner-up in the Group 1 Grand Criterium for Lady Rothschild. ... Through Oct. 15, 2009, he was in sixth place in the trainers' table with 58 wins from 363 runners and $2.85 million in prize money.
