- Born: Jan. 27, 1943, in Los Angeles, Calif.
- Residence: S. Pasadena, Calif.
- Family: Daughters Amy and Jill; son, Grant,and six grandchildren. Engaged to Thoroughbred owner Patricia Elia. Son Grant, worked as assistant to his father before opening his own stable. Now, Grant manages Rancho Paseana, in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., for Jenny Craig
- Racing Background: Went to the races with his late father, Eugene, an avid fan. Was introduced to the backstretch by now-retired trainer Gary Jones, a classmate at Pasadena City College. Started working as a groom and hot walker for Farrell Jones, Gary's father, and later worked briefly for trainer Bobby Frankel before going out on his own
- Racing Career: Saddled first winner in 1974 at Santa Anita with Nu Kali ... In 1976, his main client, Tayhill Stable, split their stable and moved many of their horses, including Seattle Slew, east. By the mid-1980's, Hofmans had four horses in his barn and was considering getting out of the business. A determined effort to get more clients and more horses succeeded ... Led trainer standings at the Hollywood Park autumn meet in 1989 ... Has won three Breeders' Cup races in 13 starts. Won inaugural Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint in 2008 with Desert Code, a longshot at 36-1. His other Breeders' Cup winners were longshots as well. Won richest race of his career in 1996, when he sent out Alphabet Soup, a 19-1 longshot, to a nose victory over Louis Quatorze in the $4 million Breeders' Cup Classic, with two time Horse of the Year Cigar third. Won 2003 Breeders' Cup Distaff with Adoration, a longshot at 40-1 ... Won 1997 Belmont Stakes (G1) with Touch Gold, denying Silver Charm's Triple Crown bid ... Won two other $1 million races, saddling Touch Gold to win the 1997 Haskell at Monmouth Park and Dramatic Gold to win Woodbine's 1994 Molson Million ... Figured in key moments for Hall of Fame riders Chris McCarron and Laffit Pincay, Jr. In 1982, saddled Aggrandizement which McCarron rode to his 3,000th victory. In 1994, saddled Andestine for the G1 Milady Breeders' Cup Handicap, McCarron's 6,000th winner. Then on July 16, 1997, saddled Le Casque Gris, McCarron's 6,500 winner. Pincay rode Hofmans trainee Individualist to victory in the 1992 Palos Verdes Handicap and became Santa Anita's alltime win leader, surpassing Bill Shoemaker's record of 2,247. (Pincay retired with 2,860 Santa Anita victories, still the record) ... Durable runner Greg's Gold was a stable favorite. In 2007, Greg's Gold won four of 10 starts including the Pat O'Brien (G2) and On Trust Handicaps, the latter in track record time of 1:26.78 for 7 1/2 furlongs. Before being retired at age 7 in 2008, the Lake George gray gelding made 25 starts, won nine races and earned $1,067,923. His victories included the 2005 Bing Crosby (G1), and in his last start the 2008 Potreto Grande (G2) at Santa Anita. He was retired to Harris Farms in Coalinga, Calif. ... Hofmans' list of G1 stakes winners also includes Balance, winner of three G1 races, Cat's Cradle, Cindy's Hero, Millenium Wind, River Flyer and Siphonic ... Former employeees include trainer John Sadler ... Nephew Brent Fabbri is assistant trainer to Hofmans and has worked for him for eight years ... Stakes winners in 2009 include Desert Code, winner of the Daytona Handicap (G3T) and Well Deserved, winner of the Cinderella Stakes and 2nd in the Landaluce Stakes ... Has been seen regularly on the popular show "Jockeys" as the mentor to jockey Iggy Puglisi, who works as an exercise rider for Hofmans while trying to resurrect his career.
