 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Born: June 25, 1954, East Orange, N.J.
  • Residence: Garden City, N.Y and Tequesta, Fla.
  • Family: sons Ryan and Zack ... Ryan is a professional surfer and senior at UCLA ... Zack is a student at Parsons School of Design
  • Education: Pre-med undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder ... Graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School in 1980
  • Racing Background: Grew up in New Jersey in a family involved in racing. Father Caesar has been an owner since 1960 ... Grandfather Manny was a bookmaker at tracks prior to the introduction of pari-mutuel wagering ... Kimmel said he was involved with Thoroughbreds long before he gave up his veterinary practice and began training in 1987 in Florida. “I started at Calder, but I’ve always been fooling around and training,” Kimmel said. “I wasn’t on the program, but I was actively involved in pinhooking horses before I took out my trainer’s license. I had owned horses from the time I was in vet school. That is when I started my involvement as an actual owner.”
  • Racing Career:

Kimmel said the first four or five years of his training career “were kind of tough.” In the early 1990s, he moved his stable to New York and gained some attention when he won with five of nine starters at Saratoga in 1991. “I kind of got the ball rolling, and picked up a client here and there and they actually supported me at the sales,” Kimmel said. One of them was Robert Maynard, for whom Kimmel purchased three graded stakes horses. The best was Twist Afleet, who won 12 of her first 14 starts, including the 1994 Test at Saratoga. “That was kind of like the springboard," Kimmel said. “My first grade 1 win and things really started advancing from there to the point where I was up to over 100 head of horses in the next few years." … Kimmel's stable cracked the $1 million level in purses earned for the first time in 1994 ... The star of his stable that year was Hidden Lake, who won the Go for Wand and the Beldame and was named champion older filly … Other grade 1 winners in the 1990s were Golden Bri, Flat Fleet Feet, Fabulously Fast, and Catinca … Kimmel's stable reached a peak in 2001 with 105 wins from 520 starters and $5.49 million in earnings ... Major earners were Pompeii and Miss Linda … Kimmel's numbers dropped off after 2001. “Absolutely there was a trough,” Kimmel said … Premium Tap emerged as the stable star in 2006 and scored a major upset in the Woodward and later won the Clark Handicap … Premium Tap also was third in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic … After winning the Clark, Premium Tap was sold for $5.7 million, according to Kimmel, to King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. Kimmel remained his trainer for a period of time after the sale, and was the trainer of record when the horse won the prestigious King’s Cup in Saudi Arabia, then went on to finish second to Invasor in the 2007 Dubai World Cup. After the World Cup, King Abdullah decided that Premium Tap would remain in Saudi Arabia. “I was naturally disappointed,” Kimmel said. “I hope that I can bring Timber Reserve to the Dubai World Cup next year and get a win over Premium Tap.” ... Timber Reserve, who Kimmel co-owns with Circle Racing and Philip Solondz, has emerged as a top runner after winning the 2007 Pennsylvania Derby in September. The win in the $1 million race came in Timber Reserve’s second start of the year … “Obviously, he is a nice horse to have won that race with only one other start this year. He is a fresh and improving horse.” … Kimmel has saddled eight Breeders’ Cup starters, with his best finish coming with Chief Seattle (second) in the 1999 Juvenile … Kimmel leads a very active life outside of racing. He is passionate about sport fishing, which he does on his boat in Florida during the winter racing season at Gulfstream Park … Kimmel also is an avid skier and will make his eighth trip in 07 to Western Canada. “It’s called skiing by helicopter, which allows you to ski all natural terrain. It’s a very expert-orientated skill.”

  • Racing Operation: Kimmel was the co-breeder, majority owner and trainer of graded-placed Awesome Twist, out of Twist Afleet ... Kimmel later sold his share in the mare to partner George Bolton ... Twist Afleet had been a solid producer for Kimmel. She produced stakes winner A New Twist (whose halter hangs in Kimmel’s Belmont office), by Storm Cat, and then two colts by Deputy Minister, who both sold for more than $400,000 ... In 2007, Kimmel's barn had 240 starters with 38 wins and earnings of $2,140,975.
