 Biography, Highlights and Media:

  • Born: Sept 2, 1935, Antigo, Wis. ... Given name is Darrell
  • Residence: Louisville, Ky.
  • Family: son, Jeff
  • Education: Lukas earned a master’s degree in education at the University of Wisconsin, where he worked as an assistant basketball coach for two years. Became a teacher and was a head high school basketball coach for nine years, which included a seven-year stint in LaCrosse, Wis. He trained and raced horses in South Dakota during the summers before turning to training full-time
  • Racing Background: Raised on a 10-acre farm outside of Antigo, Lukas, the second of three children, raced his pony at the Antigo County Fairgrounds. Before he was in high school, Lukas began developing his skills for evaluating and buying horses. With his friend Clyde Rice – also a successful horseman and father of trainer Linda Rice – Lukas bought mustangs headed to the slaughterhouse, broke and trained them and resold them in auctions
  • Racing Career:

Lukas, who was inducted into the National Museum of Racing's Hall of Fame in 1999, is known for his success with early runners. This year, his stable has been represented by Dublin, who won the G1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes, and Decelerator, who took the G3 Debutante Stakes. Lukas also won this year's G3 Lake George Stakes with Be Fair and finished second behind super filly Rachel Alexandra in the G1 Kentucky Oaks with Stone Legacy... Has been the dominant trainer in the Breeders’ Cup and is the only trainer to have had at least one starter every year from its inception until 2006. Lukas did not have a Breeders' Cup starter in 2007, but returned in the 2008 edition with juveniles Be Smart and Ninth Client ... Is the Breeders' Cup leading trainer in purse money won, starters and victories. Ten of his record 18 wins have come with 2-year-olds: five colts and five fillies. Also has won the Classic once, the Distaff four times, the Mile once, and the Sprint ...Lukas established himself as a top Quarter Horse trainer, averaging more than $1 million in purse earnings a year and developing 23 Quarter Horse champions before turning to Thoroughbreds on a full-time basis in 1978 … First major horse on the national stage was Terlingua, dam of Storm Cat and one of the best juvenile fillies of 1978. ... Lukas’ first big break with Thoroughbreds came in 1980 when Hall of Fame trainer John Nerud gave him the 3-year-old Codex, to train for Tartan Farm. Codex won the 1980 Preakness after surviving an inquiry for possibly interfering with Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk … A four-time Eclipse Award winner (1985-87 and 1994), Lukas passed Charlie Whittingham as the all-time leading money winner in 1988 and was the first trainer whose horses earned more than $100 million in purse money. He later was the first to reach the $200 million plateau … Lukas won a record 92 stakes in 1987, a feat broken in 2006 by his former assistant Todd Pletcher … Folklore's title as the outstanding 2-year-old filly of 2005 pushed Lukas’ record of Thoroughbred champions to 24. His Eclipse Awards total includes three Horse of the Year winners: Lady’s Secret (1986), Criminal Type (1990) and Charismatic (1999) … Is tied with Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons for the most Triple Crown race victories, 13. That total is the sum of four Kentucky Derbys, five Preaknesses and four Belmonts. Beginning with Tabasco Cat's 1994 Preakness win, Lukas won a record six consecutive Triple Crown races… Among his many important clients through the years have been former San Diego Chargers owner, the late Eugene Klein, Overbrook Farm, Beverly Lewis and her late husband, Bob, Michael Tabor and David Reynolds … The presenters at his induction into the Hall of Fame were his son and a group of his former assistants who went on to operate their own stables: Todd Pletcher, Kiaran McLaughlin, Dallas Stewart, Mark Hennig and Randy Bradshaw ... In 2009, Lukas was the presenter for Bob Baffert, whose own career mirrors Lukas' in terms of early success with Quarter Horses followed by unprecedented success in the Triple Crown races, as he entered the Hall of Fame ... Through Sept.14, 2009, the Lukas stable had 33 winners from 296 starters and earnings of $2,015,623 on the year.
