Born: Jan. 20, 1952, in Epsom, EnglandResident: Bolton, Ontario, CanadaFamily: wife LucianaBackground: Second-generation horseman whose father was a traveling lad (assistant trainer) in the United KingdomKeogh began as a jump rider in England but became disenchanted with the profession in the late 1970s Sister, Maureen, is a Canadian resident whom he visited on holiday and decided to join across the Atlantic in 1977. Maureen's husband, an exercise rider, introduced Mike to WoodbineRacing Operation: After galloping horses in Canada, Keogh became Roger Attfield's assistant trainer in 1986. For the next seven years, he helped the legendary Canadian trainer develop back-to-back Triple Crown winners With Approval and Isvestia, among othersIn 1993, Keogh struck out on his own, becoming the private trainer for Gustav Schickedanz, and has been his private trainer ever since Keogh plans to open a public stable in 2003, as Shickedanz has decided to dissolve some of his racing stock. The two will continue to work together Stable currently houses 28 horses, 20 at the track and eight on Schickedanz's farm. Keogh volunteered eight of his stalls this summer to trainers who lost their barns in a devastating fire at Woodbine. "When I drove in from the highway, I could see the flames. I thought it was my barn on fire," Keogh recalls. "The fire stopped two barns away. What a tragedy. I thought the least I could do was give up some of our stalls to help those who were hit."Best horses: Developed two Canadian Champion sprinters, Glanmire and Langfuhr. The former earned the crown at the age of seven in 1997. Langfuhr was a star in Canada and the United States, winning Grade I stakes in both countries. Langfuhr won the 1996 Vosburgh and the 1997 Metropolitan Mile and Carter Handicap in New YorkHas also trained 1999 Queen's Plate hero Woodcarver and Woodbine's 2002 Simcoe Stakes winner MobilSaddled Katie's Colleen, dam of 2002 Breeders' Cup Juvenile hopeful Wando, to victory in the Monmouth OaksWando, a son of Langfuhr, was Keogh's second Breeders' Cup starter, following Langfuhr's eighth-place finish in the 1996 Sprint. Though Wando finished 11th in the Juvenile, as a 3-year-old, the colt won Canada's Triple Crown, leading to 2003 Sovereign Awards as Champion 3-year-old and Horse of the YearBoth Langfuhr and Wando are stallions at Lane's End Farm
