- Racing Background: Father was a British Royal Marine who served with the U.S. Marines in Korea ... Studied at the University of Barcelona and taught English briefly ... Spent early part of career with show horses in Florida ... Switched to Thoroughbreds and spent two years with John Hartigan at Tartan Farms ... He next worked with horses in Argentina, then managed a stud farm in Venezuela ... Was assistant to legendary Charlie Whittingham in California from 1970-74. He said the most important things he learned from Whittingham were “patience and planning.”
- Racing Career: Took a job as private trainer for Corbin Robertson’s Saron Stable in 1974. Won eight races with Bold’n Determined for Saron in 1980, including a triumph over eventual division champion and Kentucky Derby winner Genuine Risk ... Opened public stable in 1983 ... Has saddled a total of 33 Breeders’ Cup runners and has six winners to his credit, including 1992 Classic winner A.P. Indy ... Breeders’ Cup winners Princess Rooney, Tasso, A.P. Indy and Hollywood Wildcat all went on to earn Eclipse Awards, with A.P. Indy crowned Horse of the Year in 1992 ... Other Breeders' Cup winners were Prized and War Chant ... His six winners ties him for third with fellow California trainer Richard Mandella in Breeders' Cup wins; he is tenth among Breeders' Cup trainers in earnings with $6.5 million ... Trained 1998 female grass champion Fiji ... Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2000, the year he won the Kentucky Derby with Fusaichi Pegasus, his first starter in that race ... Enjoyed a banner year in 2006 with more than $4.5-million in purse earnings. The year was highlighted by Aragorn, winner of two Grade 1 races – the Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile and Eddie Read Handicap – and runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Mile; and a victory in the $1-million Woodbine Mile by Becrux, Drysdale's third in that race … Conditioned five graded stakes winners on the turf in 2006: Artiste Royal won the G1 Clement Hirsch Turf Handicap; Fourty Niners Son, Obrigado and One Off won in Grade 2 competition, and Fantastic Spain in a Grade 3 race. Becrux remained in training in 2007, going over the $1 million mark in earnings. Both Becrux and Artiste Royal competed in Japan in November 2007, neither successfully ... Becrux moved to the barn of John Sadler late in the 2008 Del Mar meet ... Aritiste Royal continued to excel in 2008 winning the G1 Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap ... Pulled a mild upset in the G1 Canadian International at Woodbine with Marsh Side on October 4. The following day, he saddled the consistent filly Model to a second in the G1 Spinster Stakes at Keeneland ... Through October 12, Drysdale ranked 31st in North America with 25 wins from 182 starts and earnings of $2,936,369.
