In the Genes: Rags to Riches is the daughter of the Deputy Minister mare Better Than Honour, which makes her a half-sister to 2006 Belmont winner Jazil. The sire of Rags to Riches, A.P. Indy, won the 1992 Belmont Stakes.
Status: The victoress of the Belmont Stakes, Rags to Riches earned $1,340,028 in her six starts last year, ranking her 13th on the list of top horses by earnings. She was awarded the Eclipse for outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2007. The day after the Belmont, it was discovered Rags to Riches had a hairline fracture of her right front pastern. Given several months off and brought back into training for a 2008 campaign, the filly re-injured the pastern — an area between the ankle and the hoof — and was retired in late March. She was scheduled to leave Palm Beach Downs for Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., where she will be bred to Giant's Causeway.
