Born: March 8, 1956, London, England
Resident: Louisville, Ky.
Family: wife Jill, an analyst for Television Games Network (TVG), and daughter Devon Racing Background: Fifth-generation horseman who left home at age 15 to try a riding career in England, France, Ireland and Belgium. Byrne came to America in 1978 as an exercise rider and rode an occasional jump race, winning the 1982 New York Turf Writers Cup at Saratoga Training Career: Worked eight years crafting his trade under notable conditioners like John Russell, LeRoy Jolley, David Whitely and Howie Tesher Took out his first trainer's license in New York in 1986, winning his first graded stakes in the 1988 Tremont with Mr. Sea Sanders Moved his operation to Kentucky in 1990 Conditioned top Midwest runner City by Night to victory in the 1996 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland and then the Stephen Foster a year later Burst into national prominence during that 1997 season, winning nine consecutive races he entered during the Churchill Downs spring meeting and finishing the meet 14-for-17 overall That dream season was sparked by juvenile stars Favorite Trick and Countess Diana, who won their respective Breeders' Cup Juvenile races at Hollywood Park Favorite Trick ended a perfect, eight-race season by becoming the first 2-year-old to win Horse of the Year honors since Secretariat in 1972 Received the United Thoroughbred Trainers of America Award for Outstanding Trainer in 1997 A year later, Byrne gave up Favorite Trick, Countess Diana and crack sprinter Richter Scale to accept a private training job with Stronach Stables. His prominent trainees while with Stronach included Awesome Again and Wild Rush. Awesome Again went undefeated in a six-race season in 1998, culminating in the Breeders' Cup Classic, in which he defeated what many consider the greatest American race field ever assembled. Wild Rush dead-heated with Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Dubai World Cup winner Silver Charm in a memorable Kentucky Cup Classic in 1998 The relationship dissolved after one year and Byrne re-opened a public stable in 1999 Since returning to public training, Byrne's top horses have included graded stakes winners Pass Rush, Bella Chiarra, Duckhorn, Ethan Man and Sorcerer's Stone Current stable numbers approximately 20 horses.
