- Racing Background: Was introduced to racing at age 16 when he went to the races with a neighbor and some friends who owned horses. Four years later, he sent out his first winner ... On-track experience came from working for trainer Larry Sterling when Sterling had Vigors as a 2-year-old and developed him into a top older handicap horse … Also has worked on TV as a racing analyst.
- Racing Career: In 1980, at age 20, Ellis won the Carlsbad Stakes with sprint star To B. Or Not, who went on to win seven added-money races and set two track records in a three-year span for Ellis. “Larry first had him at 3 and won some races with him, but his owner, Carole Bohm, moved him to another trainer at 4,” recalled Ellis. “He wouldn’t run for the other trainer and Larry wouldn’t take him back when she asked him, so I asked her if I could train him while still assisting Larry.” Stable star in 2009 has been Rail Trip, who gave Ellis the richest victory of his career in the $700,000 G1 Hollywood Gold Cup Handicap. The 4-year-old gelding also won the Santana Mile Handicap and finished second in the G2 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap and G2 Californian Stakes and third in the G1 Pacific Classic ...Has also saddled Grade 1 winners Pirate's Revenge, I Ain’t Bluffing, Pharma and Key Phrase, but the two mares that put him on the map were Twice the Vice and Exotic Wood when they won Grade 1 stakes races outside California ... Twice the Vice was a winner of four Grade 1 races in 1996, including the Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park. Exotic Wood, fourth in the 1997 Breeders' Cup Sprint, had Grade 1 wins in the Santa Maria and Santa Monica handicaps at Santa Anita and the Go For Wand at Saratoga. She has been Ellis’ only Breeders' Cup starter to date ... In the same race, his brother-in-law, Paul McGee, saddled Bet On Sunshine, who ran third … Trained 2004 2-year-old champion male Declan's Moon, undefeated in his first five starts including the G1 Hollywood Futurity before being injured while on the Kentucky Derby trail ...Has had two Kentucky Derby starters, Atswhatimtalknbout (fourth in 2003) and Don’t Get Mad (fourth in 2004) … Ellis trained Buzzards Bay to wins in the G2 Oaklawn Handicap in 2006 and the G2 Californian in 2007 …Other graded stakes winners include Blue Moon, Lexa, Benchmark, Timeless Answer, Malabar Gold and Shake The Yoke...
