Born: April 7, 1949 in Milan, Italy … Resident: Newmarket, England where he trains at Bedford Lodge Stables … Family: wife Sara, son Sergio and daughter Francesca … Racing Background: Cumani's family is steeped in racing, his father Sergio was 10 times champion trainer in his native Italy and his mother was twice champion amateur rider there … His daughter also now rides as an amateur to keep the family tradition going … Cumani started in racing in the late 1960s as an assistant to his father before moving to England and working in that capacity for trainer Henry Cecil in 1974-5 … He also rode as an amateur himself during this time, becoming European amateur champion in 1972 … Training Career: Cumani took out his training license in 1976 … Among his prominent trainees: two winners of the Epsom Derby—Kahyasi in 1988 and High-Rise in 1998; Barathea winner of the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Breeders' Cup Mile; Arlington Million winner Tolomeo; Zomaradah, who won the 1999 E.P. Taylor Stakes and ran third in the Filly & Mare Turf that year; and Fillies Mile and Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Gossamer, a daughter of Barathea … In recent seasons, the previously Italian-trained Falbrav was Cumani's best horse, winning five group 1 races for him, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. Falbrav concluded his racing career finishing a close-up third in the Breeders' Cup Turf, just a neck behind High Chaparral and Johar, who dead-heated for the win ... This year, highlights have been provided by Alkaased and the ex-Australian-trained Starcraft. Alkaased won the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud, while Starcraft emerged as one of Europe's biggest racing stars with two group 1 scores … Through Oct. 12, Cumani had trained 36 winners from 248 runners in England this season, giving him prize money of $1,394,020 … Cumani also is involved in breeding as director of the 350-acre Fittocks Stud in Newmarket, which his wife manages … The stud was responsible for breeding Milan, 2001 St Leger winner and Breeders' Cup Turf runner-up.
