- Residence: Paris, Ky.
- Family: wife, Donna, who used to exercise horses for him and still serves as his key assistant
- Education: Graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in agricultural economics
- Professional Background: Has been involved with the politics of racing on some level since his 20s - he was a founding member of the KTOBA and also has served with the KTA/KTOB, Kentucky Racing Commission, Kentucky Equine Drug Council, National Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, Sales Integrity Task Force and on a NTRA panel formed to examine jockey insurance … Was briefly chief operating officer of Calumet Farm before the storied farm was sold in the early 1990s
- Racing Background: Comes from a long line of trainers; grandfather, John S. Ward was training in Kentucky back in the 1930s; father also owned and trained Thoroughbreds; uncle Sherrill Ward is best remembered as the trainer of the legendary handicap star Forego. He started working in his father's barn at age 5 and eventually took to riding and competing until he was 23 … Assisted his father in training and took over family farm when the elder Ward passed away in 1976
- Racing Career: Based in a private barn adjacent to Keeneland but uses the facility's tracks … Heads to Saratoga each summer and stables in south Florida in the winter … Solidified national prominence when Monarchos won 2001 Kentucky Derby … Served as adviser to Fusao Sekiguchi on the purchase of Fusaichi Pegasus as a $4-million yearling, who went on to win 2000 Kentucky Derby after receiving his early training from Ward … Leading trainer at Keeneland in 2000 … Has won more than 79 stakes races … Primary clients are John and Debby Oxley ... Top runners include 1999 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner and Eclipse Award champion Beautiful Pleasure … Other grade 1 winners are 1995 Kentucky Oaks winner Gal in a Ruckus, Booklet, Sky Mesa, and Forest Secrets ... Other graded stakes winners - Strong Contender, For All We Know, Miss Matched, Seek a Star, Snow Dance, Hero's Tribute, Pyramid Peak, Jambalaya Jazz and Wop Wop ... Ward's legendary patience with horses is evident in four-year-olds Minister's Bid and Dr. Pleasure, the first foal out of Beautiful Pleasure by Thunder Gulch ... Both horses have been plagued by injuries throughout their limited careers and are expected to race again in 2008 at age five ... Since returning from lengthy layoffs, Minister's Bid has won three straight races against allowance competition while Dr. Pleasure most recently finished third in the Mass Cap at Suffolk Downs on Sept. 22.
