 Biography and Highlights:
  • Born: April 4, 1953
  • Family: wife Laurence, two daughters, Clemence and Romane, and son Guillaume
  • Racing Background: Bary always wanted to be a trainer; he went to Newmarket, England in 1975 to work for Sir Mark Prescott. After only a year he headed back to France to work as assistant to the great Francois Boutin, where he stayed for four years
  • Took out his own license in 1981 and trains at Chantilly, north of Paris. He shot to international recognition in 1991 when he sent out Miss Alleged to win the Breeders' Cup Turf at Churchill Downs
  • Won his first Prix du Jockey-Club (French Derby) in 1994 with Celtic Arms. The Jockey-Club must be close to his favorite race for he has since won it with Ragmar (1996), Dream Well and runner-up Croco Rouge (1998), Sulamani (2002) and Blue Canari this year. He finished third on the trainers' earnings table in ‘98, a then career-best which did not include his Irish Derby triumph with Dream Well
  • He went one better in 2002 when he ran Andre Fabre close for the championship
  • A classic win came Bary's way in 2000 when Bluemamba won the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, and the group I tally was doubled when 2-year-old filly Amonita took the Prix Marcel Boussac at Longchamp
  • After Sulamani gave Bary his fourth win in the Prix du Jockey-Club, he also won the Prix Marcel Boussac in 2002 with Six Perfections, one of the best juvenile fillies seen in France for many years, while Domedriver took the Prix Daniel Wildenstein (formerly the Prix du Rond-Point). Domedriver gave Bary his second Breeders' Cup success in the Mile that year
  • With Sulamani sold to Godolphin, Six Perfections and Domedriver began 2003 as the stable stars. Six Perfections finished second in both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas, before things finally came right for her when she beat Domedriver in the Prix Jacques Le Marois and then came late to grab victory in the Breeders' Cup Mile. Though she didn't defend her title in the 2004 Mile, she ran a close third.
  • Bary enjoyed another good season with his 2-year-olds of 2003. In the spring Much Faster won her first four starts, including the Prix Robert Papin, before taking second in the Prix Morny. But his big autumn winner was Denebola, who gave him another Prix Marcel Boussac victory
  • 2004: Divine Proportions completed a hat-trick, for both Bary and the Niarchos family, in the Prix Marcel Boussac, France's most important contest for juvenile fillies. At that stage, he had won 37 races from 185 runners and had started 65 individual horses.
