Strengths: Highly capable if a dogfight breaks out, nearly all of his career victories have come by a half-length or less, out-slugging classy horses like Heatseeker and Awesome Gem. Versatile performer, surface-wise, he’s a graded stakes victor on dirt and all-weather tracks. Will be “home” for this year’s Classic, vanning across town from Hollywood Park, but certainly having an affinity for the surface and surroundings at Oak Tree at Santa Anita.
Weaknesses: Typically fails to reproduce big efforts in succession, either needing a bit of a break or a few races to bounce back. Unlike his big brother, Kentucky Derby winner Giacomo, he’s struggled to light the board in races at the 1-1/4 mile distance, including a well-beaten fifth in the 2007 Classic.
Bet You Didn't Know: Tiago is named for famed singer Sergio Mendes' son. Mendes is a longtime friend of Tiago's owner, music mogul Jerry Moss.
