- Racing Background: Johnson's family has a long tradition in the Thoroughbred industry. His grandfather, William Samuel Cox, was a racing pioneer in Australia. Cox founded Moonee Valley Racing Club in Victoria in 1882. The W.S. Carlton Draught Cox Plate, one of Australia's most prestigious races, which has raced annually since 1922, is named after him. In addition, his other grandfather was a notable breeder in Australia. Johnson's family owned and operated Moonee Valley for 87 years ... Began his career in the Scone area of Hunter Valley, called “the horse capital of Australia” … Also worked at the Irish National Stud … Came to the United States in 1982 and galloped horses for Carl Nafzger. Johnson also worked for trainers such as Shug McGaughey, Charlie Whittingham and Bart Cummings, one of the leading trainers in Australia … During the late 1980s, Johnson moved to the West Coast and became John Gosden's assistant trainer. Went out on his own in 1988 after Gosden returned home to England
- Racing Career: Spent three years as a trainer in California, winning his first graded stakes with Green Alligator in the 1991 California Derby. Green Alligator went on to finish fourth in the Kentucky Derby … Moved his stable to Kentucky later in 1991 … Perfect Drift has provided him with his two biggest victories to date — winning the $856,500 Stephen Foster Handicap and the $750,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup in 2003. Perfect Drift won five of eight starts as a 4-year-old that year — banking $1,505,388 in earnings ... Perfect Drift has won a total of seven graded stakes that also include the Washington Park Handicap twice and the Kentucky Cup Classic Handicap. He has hit the board in 11 other graded stakes, including four second-place finishes in grade 1 races … Additional stakes horses developed by Johnson include Laura's Pistolette, April Gator, Wudantunoit, Sabona's Beau, Sherzacat, Dash of Salt, Debit My Account, Nantucky, K.C. Blues, Lil Pushlet, Dawnelo, Mr. Wonderful and Wedded Bliss … Currently has 12 stalls at Trackside Training Center ... Two days before Perfect Drift was to run in the Pacific Classic, Johnson's father, who was visiting from Australia, suffered a heart-rhythm disturbance, was hospitalized, released, and subsequently suffered a massive stroke. He is back in Australia undergoing rehab ... Also this year, Johnson himself has had hip replacement surgery on one hip and is scheduled to undergo a similar procedure on the other hip ... Perfect Drift, Johnson's only Breeders' Cup starter, has now made a record five appearances in the Classic; his third-place finish in 2005 was his best showing.
