  • Racing Background: Johnson's family has a long tradition in the Thoroughbred industry. His grandfather, William Samuel Cox, was a racing pioneer in Australia. Cox founded Moonee Valley Racing Club in Victoria in 1882. The W.S. Carlton Draught Cox Plate, one of Australia's most prestigious races, which has raced annually since 1922, is named after him. In addition, his other grandfather was a notable breeder in Australia. Johnson's family owned and operated Moonee Valley for 87 years ... Began his career in the Scone area of Hunter Valley, called “the horse capital of Australia” … Also worked at the Irish National Stud … Came to the United States in 1982 and galloped horses for Carl Nafzger. Johnson also worked for trainers such as Shug McGaughey, Charlie Whittingham and Bart Cummings, one of the leading trainers in Australia … During the late 1980s, Johnson moved to the West Coast and became John Gosden's assistant trainer. Went out on his own in 1988 after Gosden returned home to England
