- Born: Nov. 15, 1956, Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland
- Residence: Sierra Madre, Calif., near Santa Anita Park
- Family: Single
- Racing Background: Known for his quick wit and ready sense of humor, Gallagher has been involved with horses most of his life and rode jumpers as an amateur in Ireland. His older brother, Jimmy, was a jockey
- Racing Career: He worked at The Curragh for trainer Paddy Norris for several years and then with Andy Geraghty before coming to the United States in 1980. He worked for a time at the late Earl Scheib's Green Thumb Farm in Southern California, returned to Ireland briefly and then headed back to Southern California to stay, working first with fellow Irishman John Sullivan from 1981-90 and then joining riding legend-turned-trainer Bill Shoemaker as his assistant. He became an integral part of that operation when Shoemaker became paralyzed in a 1991 auto accident. While with "The Shoe," Gallagher helped train stakes winners Diazo, Fire the Groom, Glen Kate and Fine n' Majestic. Eventually, he took over the string after Shoemaker retired. “I’ve been very fortunate,” Gallagher said. “A lot of people when I worked with Shoe stayed with me.”... Current stable star is Magical Fantasy, a 4-year-old filly who has won the 2009 G1 John Mabee Stakes, the G1 Gamely Stakes and the G2 Santa Barbara Handicap on turf. Magical Fantasy gave Gallagher his first Grade 1 stakes victory as a 42-to-1 longshot in the 2008 Del Mar Oaks. "She's been improving with each race," said Gallagher of his Breeders' Cup candidate... Also captured the G2 San Clemente Handicap with Starlarks this year...Gallagher recorded his richest victory in 2003 with Adminniestrator in the $500,000 Sunshine Millions Turf, the only victory achieved by a Cal-bred in the inaugural eight-race series ... In 2003, owners David Bienstock and Chuck Winner bought Domestic Dispute the week before the Kentucky Derby and gave Gallagher his first Derby starter. The colt finished 10th but came back to win Santa Anita’s prestigious G2 Strub Stakes in 2004 ... Won the G2 Honeymoon Handicap on the Hollywood Park turf with Three Degrees in 2005 and Valbenny in 2007. Valbenny also won the G3 Miesque Stakes in 2006 and the G3 Senorita Stakes in 2007... Other major stakes winners include Walkslikeaduck in the G2 Del Mar Derby and G2 Bay Meadows Derby in 2000, Tucked Away in the G2 Clement Hirsch Handicap (G2) in 2005, Needwood Blade in the G3 Bay Meadows Handicap in 2004, Festival in the G3 Dahlia Handicap in 2004 and McCann's Mojave in the California Cup Classic in 2005...
