Biography and Highlights:
|
|
- Height: 5'8-1/2"
- Weight: 114
- Family: Sons Jarrett, Matthew, Hunter, Ashton, and Laike Theriot; wife Dawn is expecting another child due in 2010.
- Through Oct. 25, 2009, Theriot had 111 wins from 804 starts with $4,573,592 in purse earnings. His win rate was at 14% and he finished in the money 37% of the time ... In three tries, his best finish in a Breeders' Cup race was a fourth in the 2008 Juvenile aboard Terrain.
- Rides the Kentucky/Louisiana circuits with agent Fred Aimie holding his book; tried Saratoga for the first time in the summer of 2009 and won the G1 Three Chimneys Hopeful aboard Dublin for Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas. Lukas has given Theriot quite a bit of support, naming him as a first-call rider on many of his runners.
- Top mounts of 2009 included Dublin, Tizaqueena (G2 Churchill Distaff Turf Mile Stakes, Fortin Handicap), Dubai Majesty (G3 Winning Colors Stakes, Buffalo Trace Franklin County Stakes), Afternoon Stroll (G3 Appalachian Stakes), Greely's Conquest (Remington Park Sprint Cup Stakes), and Mr. Nightlinger (Jim McKay Turf Sprint Stakes).
- Was involved in the tragic spill at Arlington Park that resulted in the paralysis of journeyman Rene Douglas in May of 2009. Stewards gave the jockey a 30-day suspension, which he served, for his ride in the Arlington Matron.
- Set a meet-record of 94 wins at Fair Grounds during the 2007-08 season.
- Had a breakout year in 2007, when he won three graded races at Keeneland including his first-ever Grade 1, the Shadwell Turf Mile on Purim. His mounts' earnings of $5.6 million (more than double his previous best year) included $1.5 million in black-type events.
- Posted the first six-win card of his career out of just seven mounts in 2007 at Churchill Downs, and has won five on a single card at Evangeline, Lone Star, Fair Grounds and Oaklawn. Has won four on one card at Keeneland.
- At 5' 8-1/2", he was listed in a 2006 issue of Sports Illustrated for Kids as the tallest active rider.
- Like many riders from Cajun country, the native of Arnaudville, Louisiana, started out riding at bush tracks, before his Evangeline debut in 1995 at age 16.
- It’s no surprise that Theriot would chose riding as a career. His father Harold exercised horses and became a trainer; his uncle Larry Melancon is well-respected veteran of the saddle; Calvin Borel and Hall-of-Famer Eddie Delahoussaye also are members of his family.
