Earned a spot in the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic via a Breeders' Cup Challenge victory in the Go For Wand Handicap at Saratoga on Saturday, July 26, 2008.
Strengths: Proven commodity won the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Eclipse Award as Champion Mare, and has continued to be up to the test with a sharp consistency since. Possesses a fantastic pressing style and high cruising speed that allows her to avoid trouble and get the first jump on late-running rivals. Dominant when she should be and tenacious when she needs to be, Ginger Punch has won multiple Grade 1 races in photo finishes. Has shown an ability to bounce back from defeat, winning the ’07 Distaff after a surprising loss in the Beldame.
Weaknesses: In her only start west of Kentucky, she was handled easily by Zenyatta in this spring’s Apple Blossom at Oaklawn, though she was giving away six pounds that day. Ginger Punch been involved in several tough races in 2008 including a gut-wrencher in the Personal Ensign, which can take a toll.
