Strengths: International experience at the group 1 level in both America and France. French Derby third and victory in Secretariat at Arlington show he’s among the world’s best 3-year-olds on grass.
Weaknesses: Recent efforts in America leave some question as to his ability against the best older horses in the world. Has not finished with flair of late, and he’s unproven at the 1 1/2 miles distance.
In The Genes: Sire, Dr Fong, won Ascot’s prestigious G1 St. James's Palace and placed second in the Oak Tree Derby in America. At stud, Dr Fong best known for producing French group 1 winner Ask for the Moon and Saratoga stakes winner Spotlight, as well as Shamdinan. First foal out of the French group 2-placed mare Shamdara.
Status: Remains in training for a 2008 campaign. Transferred from Angel Penna's Florida barn to Doug O'Neill in Southern California in March. In mid-May, he was moved once again, this time to trainer Dan McFarlane.
Bet You Didn’t Know: When Shamdinan came to the U.S. he was given to Doug O'Neill, who was the trainer of record for his win in the Secretariat. Shamdinan was then moved to Angel Penna's barn in New York where he prepared for his runner-up effort in the Breeders' Cup Turf.
