Strengths: Despite his age and inexperience, he’s displayed all the features of a quality racehorse. Scored an eye-popping win at first asking on July 7 at Belmont Park, and proved that the effort was no fluke by winning the G2 Futurity at Belmont and the G1 Wood Memorial in subseqent efforts.
In the Genes: His sire, Tale of the Cat, is the nation’s fourth-leading sire overall in ’07 by progeny earnings, and he’s sixth amongst Juvenile sires this year. Tale of the Cat was an extremely versatile performer during his shortened racing career. Tale of Ekati’s dam, the Japanese-bred Silence Beauty (by Sunday Silence), was winless from just three career starts, but she’s a half-sister to the multiple graded stakes-winning, $1.3 million earner Sky Beauty. She has a 2008 filly by Perfect Soul and will be bred back to him.
Status: Despite his win in the Wood Memorial over divisional leader War Pass, Tale of Ekati was dismissed by bettors in the Kentucky Derby and went to the post at 37-1. Ridden by Eibar Coa, Tale of Ekati finished fourth in the Run for the Roses. In the Belmont, he suffered a gash on his right hind heel. His training regimen is on hold until the gash heals.
Bet You Didn’t Know: His owner, Charles Fipke, is a noted diamond explorer, and Ekati is the name of Fipke’s mines in the Northwest Territories. This was the first 2-year-old saddled by trainer Barclay Tagg in the Breeders’ Cup.
