Strengths: Bred to run all day, he chased the speedy, undefeated War Pass through fast fractions in the G1 Champagne and held on quite gamely for third. Sent off at odds of 8-to-5 in his career debut at Saratoga, he whistled to a runaway sprint score.
Weaknesses: He’s only run three times, has only a maiden victory to his credit, and he’s never been tested around two turns. And while he has a race over the Monmouth track, the Grade III Sapling, it was a test in which he broke sluggishly and managed only a distant, third-place finish as the heavy favorite.
In the Genes: By the top sire Distorted Humor, who currently ranks third in the nation by progeny earnings in ’07. Classic contender Any Given Saturday, ’03 Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide, and ’05 Travers victor Flower Alley are a few of his top offspring. He was the leading sire of stakes winners in ’06. Z Humor’s mother, Offtheoldblock, a $600,000 Keeneland sales buy, won only once from nine career starts and is a daughter of route influence A.P. Indy, winner of the 1992 Breeders’ Cup Classic and Belmont Stakes.
Bet You Didn’t Know: With five wins and over $8.5 million in earnings, Bill Mott is the fourth- leading trainer in Breeders’ Cup history, but he’s yet to score from just four tries in the Juvenile events.
