  • Residence: Hallandale, Fla.
  • Family: Single. His uncle, Oscar Chavez, rides in Singapore.
  • Through Oct. 5, 2008, Saez ranked 28th in the nation by earnings, with $5,467,259 and 96 winners from 526 starters. He visited the winner’s circle 18% of the time, and had a 52% in-the-money percentage.
  • Only prior Breeders’ Cup mount was Proud Spell in the 2007 Juvenile Fillies; the duo finished second behind eventual Eclipse Award champion Indian Blessing.
  • Young jockey was thrown into the media spotlight as the rider of 2008 Kentucky Derby contender Eight Belles, the Larry Jones-trained filly who took on the boys and finished second to Big Brown but broke down after crossing the wire. One day prior, he piloted stablemate Proud Spell to a satisfying 5-length victory in the 2008 Kentucky Oaks.
  • Top mounts of 2008 included Proud Spell (G1 Kentucky Oaks, G1 Alabama Stakes, G2 Allaire DuPont Distaff, G2 Fair Grounds Oaks), Kodaik Kowboy (G2 Amsterdam Stakes), and Sweet Hope (G3 Endine Handicap).
  • Trainer Jones has been his biggest supporter, giving him mounts aboard top stakes contenders and regular business at Delaware Park, where Saez is based. Saez became a regular rider for Jones at Delaware in 2006; Jones rode him at Oaklawn Park in 2007 and Fair Grounds in 2008 where he was mentored by retired jockey Randy Romero.
  • Leading apprentice at Delaware Park in 2006 after coming to the United States in February of that year. Won his first race in this country as an apprentice and also scored immediately upon becoming a journeyman.
  • Started riding in Panana in 2004 and was the leading apprentice there in 2005.
