- Racing Background: Although he grew up in southwest Kansas, von Hemel spent every summer at Ak-Sar-Ben Racetrack in Omaha, Nebraska where his father Don is the all-time leading trainer and a member of the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame … Kelly served as a hotwalker for his father starting at the age of 14 … Took out his first trainer’s license in 1985 which enabled him to oversee his father’s string of horses at Canterbury Downs … Continued working as his father’s assistant in locations such as Fonner Park, Lincoln Park and Ak-Sar-Ben … Comes from a racing family; in addition to father, brother Donnie K. is a leading trainer at Oaklawn and Remington and father-in-law Larry Donlin also trains
- Racing Career: von Hemel went out on his own in 1990 at Remington Park … gradually upgraded his stock and moved to Iowa in 2002 … Currently has between 25-50 horses in training, competing on Prairie Meadows, Remington Park and Oaklawn Park circuit …Won the 1,000th race of his career on Aug. 11, 2007 at Prairie Meadows with Bones Light, a horse owned by the Dream Walkin' Farms of country music superstar Toby Keith ... Conditioned Iowa-bred champion Sure Shot Biscuit, a 13-time stakes winner and the only Iowa-bred millionaire … After retiring with earnings of $1,025,480, Sure Shot Biscuit was inducted into Iowa’s Racing Hall of Fame … Fleet Flyer was an Iowa champion at both two and three … Semaphore Man captured the King Cotton Stakes at Oaklawn and placed in two graded stakes in 2007 … Other stakes winners in ’07 include Camela Carson, Crimson King Cat, Irish Party, and Seekingtherainbow … Can claim over 113 career stakes wins … Despite local stakes wins, von Hemel credits Filly & Mare Sprint runner Miss Macy Sue with “taking him to places he had never been before.” ... In 2007, she became his first stakes winner at Churchill Downs when victorious in the G3 Winning Colors Stakes and his first starter at Saratoga when she competed in the G2 Honorable Miss Handicap … Miss Macy Sue, his first Breeders’ Cup starter, ran third at odds of 6-1.
