- Through Dec. 31, 2007 had 79 wins from 648 mounts and earnings of $4,079,799 to rank him in the top 60 jockeys by earnings in 2007.
- Won the Breeders' Cup Mile in 2001 aboard Val Royal in dramatic come-from-behind fashion. Other Breeders' Cup accomplishments have been a pair of third-place finishes in 1999 (Big Jag, Sprint) and 2003 (Century City, Mile).
- Top horses in 2007--Buzzards Bay (G2 Californian), Silver Charades (G3 All Along BC) ... In 2006, rode Arravale to victories in the G1 Del Mar Oaks and G1 E.P. Taylor. They also paired up for a second-place finish in the Canadian.
- Began in the sport grooming and galloping horses for his father, Jose Sr., who had been one of the premier riders in South America. Came to the United States at 14 with his family and he became a hotwalker at the West Palm Beach, Fla., farm of Edson Alexandre. Galloped horses at Calder Race Course for P.G. Johnson before riding as an apprentice in New York for Johnson and other trainers.
- Won his first race aboard Thor Thors when he was 19, on July 17, 1994, in only his third ride at Belmont Park. During the winter of 1995, he won 17 races at Hialeah. Continued his apprenticeship on the Southern California circuit. Leading rider at the Fairplex meet that year with 21 wins. Rode in Northern California before moving his tack to Kentucky in 1996, where he rode until returning to Southern California in 1997.
- Nephew of highly respected retired Southern California turf rider Fernando Toro and trainer Juan Suarez. Toro won the inaugural Breeders' Cup Mile aboard Royal Heroine in 1984 at Hollywood Park.
- Regular rider for top sprinter Big Jag, winning eight stakes with him in 1998-99 ... First grade 1 win was with Tali'sluckybusride in the 2001 Oak Leaf ... Other grade 1 wins have been in the 2003 Manhattan H (Meteor Storm), 2003 Beverly D (Heat Haze), 2003 San Carlos (Aldebaran), 2004 Santa Anita Derby (Castledale) and his two 2006 wins on Arravale.
