Strengths: Multiple Grade 1 winner has proven capable at the Classic distance, winning the Travers while toting 126 pounds. Handles any track surface, winning major stakes on dirt and multiple all-weather tracks. Freshened and very well managed following the Kentucky Derby, left out of the Triple Crown grind to focus on a fall assault.
Weaknesses: Has had trouble at the start of several key races, which can be problematic in large fields. Travers victory was on the slower side and its alumni (Mambo In Seattle, Tres Borrachos) have struggled in subsequent attempts against top-class elders. He, too, will have to prove he can handle the rise against older horses.
Bet You Didn't Know: Colonel John was named after John Geider, an Army Reserve Lt. Col. and longtime friend of both Ken Troutt and Bill Casner, the breeders of the son of Tiznow.
