Biography and Highlights:
|
|
- Born: Jan. 30, 1960, Kildalkey, Ireland
- Residence: Louisville, Ky.
- Family: wife Kim; daughter Aisling, son Declan
- Racing Background: Following an internship at Irish National Stud, Carroll worked for John Oxx, also in his native Ireland ... He came to the U.S. when he was 25, with no real idea of what he was going to do. "I just knew there was a lack of opportunity in Ireland – the economy was terrible," he said... From 1984 to 1990, he was an exercise rider for Shug McGaughey, regularly riding such Grade 1 winners as Easy Goer and Seeking the Gold ... Was an assistant for Pete Vestal for two years before going out on his own in 1992
- Racing Career: Carroll trains multiple graded stakes winner Acoma for Helen K. Groves and Helen C. Alexander. The Empire Maker filly's victories in 2009 include the G3 Azeri Stakes and G3 Early Times Mint Julep Handicap. He also trains graded stakes winner Selva for the mother-daughter team ... In 2008, Carroll saddled Denis of Cork in the G1 Kentucky Derby. Although the Grade 3 winner was the last horse to make the field by earnings, Denis of Cork finished third in the Run for the Roses at odds of 27-1. Owned by Mr. & Mrs. William K. Warren, Jr., Denis of Cork went on to finish second in the G1 Belmont Stakes but was sidelined shortly thereafter with the beginnings of a hairline fracture. The Harlan's Holiday colt was originally scheduled to have a 60 day layoff as a result, but then injured his right front suspensory while in pre-training in Florida. After giving him plenty of time to recover from his second injury, Denis of Cork was returned to Carroll's barn in September 2009 ... Carroll's first stakes winner was Marshua's River, who took the 1994 Suwannee River Handicap and followed up with a win in the Buckram Oak Handicap, both grade 3 events. That year, he also won the G2 Forego with American Chance, who became Carroll's first Breeders' Cup starter when he finished eighth in the Sprint. ... Other stakes winners trained include Fire Slam, Cuando, Keene Dancer, Alisios, Connected, Devil Time and Kodema.
