- Professional Background: Second-generation horseman, following in the footsteps of his father, for whom he served as an assistant before going out on his own in 1968 at Arlington Park. Cousin to Charlie Stutts, trainer for Mount Joy Stables beforfe Bennie. ... Made a big splash this past winter when his trainee, Smooth Air, finished a solid second to Big Brown in the Florida Derby and brought immediate first-time celebrity to the 70-year-old trainer ... Showed his natural humility by saying he didn't think Big Brown could have been caught if the horses had gone around the track again ... Nevertheless, trained Smooth Air for a shot in the Kentucky Derby, finishing 11th in the 20-horse field ... Home base has been Calder Race Course since 1971 ... "I remember watching it being built," the says ... Calder is where Smooth Air won his most recent start, the Needles Stakes on September 27, 2008 ... Earlier in the year, the colt won the Hutcheson Stakes and the Ohio Derby, both Grade II events ... Trainer has conditioned horses for Mount Joy Stables for 10 years and in addition to Smooth Air, has saddled stakes winners Predawn Raid, winner of 2003 Fred W.
